I've been sent this from another forum. Seems relatively simple to do ...
Protective nosebands for horses in under-developed countries
Please can you help by making nosebands to help horses that have wire or chain cutting into their noses? Spana is a charity which helps animals in third world countries and tries to teach people how to look after their animals -please see: www.spana.org Spana use the nosebands in most of the countries they work in but particularly in Syria and Jordan where wire, chain or rough metal may be used for nosebands and another charity, www.safehaven4donkeys.org who are based in the Holy Land use these nosebands too.
Karen Jones, Spana Veterinary Director, says We often come across horses, mules and donkeys with open sores on their noses or chronically thickened skin due to these painful materials. Being able to cover their nose pieces with a soft material is hugely beneficial to these animals, and their owners are very grateful. They do not last that long in hot and dusty conditions so we often have to replace them The use of these metal materials is not generally down to cruelty, but to poverty and ignorance.
Version A (preferred version)
1 Washable nylon fur fabric preferred or something like fleece or blanket. You can recycle your old fleece jackets and blankets.
2 Size 11 x 4 (28cm x 10cm)
3 One strip of Velcro to be attached to the inside length; another strip to be attached to the outside of the fabric
4 The noseband can then be attached to the bridle by rolling it around the existing noseband (often made with wire) and securing it with the velcro.
These can be used on formed bridles and headcollars where pieces cannot be undone to thread them through a closed nose band.
Version B
Washable fur or fleece fabric of 6 (15cm) long x 2 (5cm) wide, joined along the 6 in (15cm) width edge to make a tube these can be used to cover chin and crupper straps (under the tail) as well as fitted as nose bands on some types of bridles
Please post them to one of the two following charities:
