My TB has been headshaking for a while and today I tried taking the noseband off his bridle and it’s completely resolved it. Trouble is I compete dressage, so need a noseband.
In the long run I’m going to get an anatomical bridle, but I have a unaff competition next week, can you put the noseband over the top of the headpiece for a short term solution or does that cause other issues?

Which noseband did you take off? My lad is very sensitive. I bought all sorts and ended up with an anatomical bridle which he went ok in. I then tried a drop. First day ok, second day I popped it down a hole and he was terrible. I have found out that he can't stand any form of noseband sitting on or near the soft bits of his nose. He is back in just a cavesson but I have made sure it sits above the soft part of his nose

He’s just in a inch wide cavesson noseband at the minute. Very simple, nothing special. Was only just 2 fingers below the cheekbone and didn’t sit overly low on his face.
I’m pretty sure it’s the pressure of the thin noseband strap underneath the head piece he doesn’t like

noseband onto works.
Or these work https://www.speedgate.co.uk/ecomm/f...idle-components/prolite-headpiece-cushion.htm

Or lemieux do a sheepskin version.
Or these are BD legal - https://harryhall.com/protechmasta-poll-guard

I doubt anybody would notice the noseband over the top of the headpiece. I've had success with the Acavello gel headpiece addition before switching to a shaped headpiece so that may help?

I wish that BD would allow the anatomical nosebands that don't go around the bottom of the head. I don't have the same problem you have, but my horse gets very uncomfortable with her salivation collecting under her chin, and coming into contact with her noseband. I now ride her in the bridle for schooling and she is so much quieter in it and works so well. I was worried I would have less control but she isn't inclined to run off anyway so after our first ride with the bridle, and us both getting used to it, I will battle to ride with anything else. I believe Ireland Dressage have reconised it, so can only hope that BD will too.

Aesthetically that looks like a much nicer, neater bridle than any other "special bridle" on the market. I am not a fan of these ones that have the noseband almost encircle the bit as it just looks hideous and too much on their heads!

OP - just a thought - is your browband big enough? Some horses don't like them even being the correct fit and would rather have them a bit bigger.

I like the look of those bridles! I bet my boy would go well in one. I’m surprised they’re not BD legal but I suppose it doesn’t ‘do up’ as such, which I think is silly really.I wish BD would allow competing without a noseband, as it doesn’t affect anything to do with way of going etc. Would make life so much easier for a lot of people.

Yes I made sure the browband wasn’t pinching or too small as a first point of call! Been struggling with his head shaking for a couple months and tried everything (or well I thought) until Tuesday when I took his noseband off just to see and he went back to normal!

Does BD give a reason for insisting on nosebands?

It seems ridiculous that in an attempt to make their horse more comfortable people have to buy anatomical bridles which in most cases add a load more leather, just in different places
If you could just ditch the noseband then you could do away with the browband too
I often ride in a Micklem without the browband and the headpiece never ever slips back

i've never heard them give a reason but I could be wrong. I expect its a case of 'standard English tack' and standardisation of all competitors thing.

I agree with you though, I think the less tack the better! Seems silly that loosing a bit of leather, which is almost always so loose it makes no difference, means you cant compete.
