Nosebands or not.......!

Axel has been bitten on the underside of his chin and when I tacked him up this morning I realised it is right where his noseband sits, it's a crank noseband and the padded bit underneath actually digs in to the cut

So I took it off and rode him without it and would you believe he was no different than he normally is

and I have it fairly tight too.

The only thing is he looked awful!
 
I know, i don't like the look of no noseband, but my lad couldn't care less whether he has one or not, so he's just in a fairly loose cavesson.

i feel bad for putting fashion-tack on him!!
 
I've always thought a cavason is more there for appearance, it balences a face out, or to attacth other things. Unless its a crank it doesn't do anything anyway, I guess that does make it "fashion tack" lol, never thought of it like that before. You know what really looks weird tho, a driving bridle with no noseband! Seriously freaky
 
I have an Arab and I really think she looks better without the nose band, at time she could do with a crackle as she likes doing race horse impersonations by crossing her jaw, twisting her neck and sticking her tongue out, this is generally followed by carting mummy til she start swearing and threating the knacker man. If I didn't find it so amusing I would probably use a grankle

I used to ride my Highland in a loose cavesson, he never needed it but his head looked massive without one!
 
Noseband, definitely. I would have no steering/brakes without it and my boy would look completely ridicuolous! I second the loose cavassong thing though on a horse that needs something there.
 
I am in a state of shock at how good he was, normally I have the crank done up on the 2nd hole and the flash quite tight too, I obviously don't need them do I?

Although he was in a very laid back good mood today, I'd hate to see what he would be like when he's in a bad mood!
 
I never use a noseband but I agree a heavy or cob type horse looks better with a nice wide flat noseband.
 
I don't normally use a noseband but when my horse had a few "issues" out of the blue a couple of weeks ago, I put on a v thin cavesson incase she gets her head down...

not sure it'd actually do anything though

Related question - can you ride in an in-hand bridle (e.g. stitched cavesson attached to cheekpieces?)?????
 
I have seen people ride in an in hand bridle before, a girl that I went to school with always rode her pony in one. I don't think she knew it was an in hand bridle I think she just liked the look of it!

I've seen a white one i love the look of...
I just fear I would look an absolute tool if I rode in it?

Just wondering if there was an ACTUAL REASON why you shouldn't?
 
I didn't used to use a nose band on my boy (despite comments that he needed on??) but he started playing with the bit a lot when I tried to half halt and we had to put a noseband and flash on for a couple of days - the flash is now off but have never bothered to remove the nose band - it's not tight anyway and he actually looks better with it than without.
