Big horses are ridden in cavessons done up slightly on the tight side and small horse has a cavesson done up as loose as it will go (so I can attach a head check to it).
use grakle on one to stop him crossing his jaw, then drop noseband for dressage. another has a flash to keep his tongue in his mouth. the third just has a normal noseband because he's a good boy!!
I have h now working well back in a snaffle but have some issues with brakes. i dont like flashes and a cavesson is not quite enough. I am so chuffed to have him back in a snaffle I dont want to change his bit. He is ok most of the time but has his moments which I can't tell he is going to have until he has one, so no option of knowing to use a stronger bit etc !!!!!
Nothing normally but if my mare starts to open her mouth I put a flash on her until she's ok without a noseband.
She gets an itchy face so don't like to use unneccessary things.
a grakle took our tb from strongish bits to a happy mouth snaffle as he had to respect what he had in his mouth. worked really well and dressage became loads softer but its banned BD (typical)
Drop because B opens his mouth otherwise and he hates a flash, tends to fight against it a lot. Drop also helps with breaks when hacking as he keeps the contact rather than trying to fight it.
Nothing - Marnie has a couple of scars on her nose that I think must have been from a too-tight headcollar before I bought her. If I put a noseband on her, they rub. She doesn't really need one, so I leave it off - less to clean too
A drop normally, not tight but he seems to settle with it. When we jump either a normal cavesson or a rope noseband purely to attach the martingale to.
New one is in a grackle, will hunt a drop for her too as I really dont rate flash nosebands at all.
I use a loose flash on Solo, with his sweet iron/copper snaffle- although he can open his mouth a tiny bit with it, he backs off it if it's tight. I hack him out in a standing martingale, so can't use a drop.
Red has a cavesson for everyday, with his hanging cheek, but a grackle for hunting or jumping, with his dutch gag, as he crosses his jaw, puts his head down, and p*sses off.
i use a plain cavisson on all my own horses.
my ISH is very sensitive and cannot stand a noseband done up too tightly.
whe she was a youngster i was told by someone 'knowledgable' to put a flash on her as she kept opening her mouth and throwing her head up.she started rearing and they told me to put a martingale on.and the rearing got much bigger.
have had horses on loan who have had flashs on-owners choice.they rode the same with them on and off for me so i dont think any of them 'needed' one but if thats what the owner wanted i wasnt too bothered.
