Firstly im interested to know what nosebands you use on your horses and why?

Call me odd but i just wanted to know peoples reasons for using what they do.

My second question is what is the difference between and drop noseband and a flash - and what would you use on what type of horse and why?

Only asking as im thinking of changing Archie into a drop noseband but wanted to know why people use them, benefits, disadvantages etc.

Archie is very gobby (teeth/back/tack all fine) and is currently in a flash which dosent seem to do b*gger all - he can still evade the bit and cross his jaw if he wants to. Would a drop noseband help prevent him from crossing his jaw and crunching on the bit so much?
 
Its worth a try. I'm a big fan of drop nosebands and I would use on my my monster if I didn't need the cavesson to attach a nose-net to.

Because the drop fastens lower than a flash can it is quite effective in helping to prevent the jaw from crossing. I think Archie would look very posh in one too! Give it a try. Stubben make a lovely drop.

I prefer a mexican grakle to a flash, doesn't seam to matter how tight you get the caveson bit, tightening the flash strap pulls it down, I think flashes and grakles became popular because the drop can sit quite low on the nose some schools think this could interfere with breathing.

The grakle can be quite high on the cheek bones without interference and i find can be tightened more than the others. I actually fasten the bottom part first then the top bit. i find it easier thats all.

Grackle nosebands are not allowed for dressage, unfortunately.

A drop which is properly fitted should not interfere with breathing in any way.
 
Dan and Fleur both in loose Cavessons. Fleur used to be in a flash but got rid of it!

Problem with flashes is they are rarely fitted correctly. They are normally done up tighter than the cavesson which pulls it down and makes it ineffective and can even restrict breathing. I find drop nosebands better as they are easier to fit correctly and although look a bit ugly are just more effective.

I would for archie consider completly removing flash and slackening off the cavesson to see if he is actually reacting to the pressure of the noseband when crossing his jaw, and then if that doesn't work try a drop. It will stop him crunching the bit but depending on fit he may still be able to try and cross his jaw as its his mouth that is primarily restricted not his jaw!
 
A bit of a shallow response, but I don't think drop nosebands look very nice!

I changed from a flash to a grackle because I was advised that it might improve brakes and be more comfy for him and it hasn't really made any difference.
 
he has to have something to keep his mouth together as in just a cavesson he opens it right up when hes being a git and rears and it makes his napping even worse - i have more control with a flash.

And yes, i can fit a flash properly, and no its not too tight round his nose, or round his mouth!!

(just in case people think i am actually that vain, im not, im interested in whats best for my horse, not what looks best!)
 
Drops are coming back in a big way and I think they are much more effective than a flash. Definitly worth trying one, as nosebands and dressage go it's pretty much your only option left.
 
dont get me wrong, hes not like it all the time - i just thought i might try a drop and see how he goes in it, it might be more comfortable for him aswell...

Look at Spirit Freedom, he's a big horse and looks amazing in a drop:

We had a lovely chestnut mare who had quite a big head (think old fashioned warmblood type) and she looked absolutely stunning in her drop - which was a gorgeous rich brown colour.

I want to get a really nice padded one (in black) and recommendations? It needs to have quite a thin bit that goes over the poll as it has to fit through my elevator.....
 
Always worth a go.

Jessica Kurten's horse wore a Stubben one which looked very nice and suited him, I think Archie would look good in one too.

How is his Splint now PG?

Personally use a Grackle at home (high ring) as G is a gobby rude little git on occasions too! And luckily uinder BE rules can use it eventing too!! However, for dressage I just swap to a tight Flash. Not a particular fan of flashes as they dont disperse pressure, and put pressure directly on teeth! But grackles dont. Drops are stronger than flashes, as they are more direct. Have you tried swapping bits to see if he is resisting to the bit pressure?
 
Bit is fine, its a kk ultra training snaffle. Im simply asking views on nosebands! im perfectly happy with everything else!!

There is no point in me schooling Archie in a grackle as i wont be competing him in it! And i hate over tight flashes im afraid, and over tight nosebands - one of my pet hates. And something Archie would evade even more!

splint is fine, its just settled down nicely and theres no swelling anymore - as where he had knocked himself it was bruised around that area too. He has matching ones now - very classy

You asked about nosebands, so I responded, I merely asked about the bit, as because it goes in the mouth,can have an effect on what they are doing in their mouth

I use a drop on my boy, who also does dressage (I actually like the look of them & think it really suits him

) However I use it as I don't think he liked the pressure of the caverson part of his flash on the back of his jaw. He used to not take the contact forward & could lurk behind the bridle. I Changed to the drop (on the recomendation of my instructor) & he goes much better in it & is much more constistant.
I have a elevator too & it fit over the head piece with no problem. I'd def give one a go.

I looked at the sabre one earlier - it looks really nice, altho quite expensive. I really wanted a nice padded one tho as i dont like the un-padded ones. I guess i can always sell it on ebay if it dosent work out!

Archie can 'lurk' behind the bit aswell at times - so perhaps a drop is a good thing to try on him. Im going to order one in a minute

I mix it up a bit myself!! I like Crank nosebands but don't overtighten and then i regualrly swap that with a flash.
I haven't ridden in a drop for many years.
I don't like to always give the horse the same tack to work in as i think if they are that way inclined they will create an evasion to everything, so by varying things it keeps them a bit fresh and thinking!!
 
Sorry, completely off topic, but it seems strange that BD will allow quite a few variations of noseband, but will not allow a horse to be ridden without one. I would have thought that as long as the horse accepted it, there wouldent be a problem!
Maybe try calling the stubben contact line (to be found on their website) as when my friends bridle broke, and she could not find the replacement parts in the shops, stubben let her buy it directly from them.
