Nosebands

Would you be worth just buying a cheap one to try with then if it doesnt work you havent wasted to much money. Think the really cheapy imported ones are only about 6 or 7 pounds and a few 2nd hand on ebay. Then if you like it and he goes well splash out on a really good one.

Ah, i suppose. I'm only sour as i had to buy a whole new bridle as my pony doesnt like the extra pressure created by the noseband strap on her poll! She would much prefer not to wear one at all!
 
PG in the Stubben catalogue they call the drop noseband the "Hanoverian [drop] caveson" so if you are searching might be worth typing in that. Unless you are getting the elevator from Solihull?

ooo i might try searching that then - i just want to see what a stubben one looks like, to decide which i prefer. Im about to ring elevator tho to see if them sell drops separately - altho i doubt they do!
 
Spanish riding school start most of their horses off in drops which I think is pretty interesting. I do not think I have ever seen them ride in a flash.
Drops were very popular when I started riding then the flash took over.
 
I much prefer drops to flashes...flashes aren't well designed to do the job they're supposed to be for.

If you're getting a drop try and find a 3-way adjustable nose (buckle behind chin plus one either side of the nose part as if the front nose section is too long they're as much use as a chocolate teapot )

I have mare in flash (done up correctly) however wanted a drop as I prefer them, and think they are more affective - but I bought the wrong size and haven't changed it yet LOL...

If I buy one, I'll dump the flash I think.

Not sure of hte grackle, as when it is tightened, it tightens all around which includes the poll - ???!!!

Both mine go in a plain cavesson coz they don't need anything stronger.

I agree that most flashes are ineffective, and that a drop is far better at keeping the mouth shut, but if you want to prevent crossing then a grackle is your best bet

I agree but you cant use a grackle for BD so a drop is your only option I think.

I use plain cavessons. Never use flashes etc. on any of mine as I dont like them. I like my horses to be relaxed and find strapping their jaws shut goes against this! Just my thoughts. It just depends on what suits the horse overall though.
 
My boy used to crunch his bit and was in a tight flash and happy mouth french link when I got him. I took the flash off and put him in the mildest myler bit - coz they can't bend them back enough to crunch them - and loose fitting cavesson. He got bord of trying and after a short while completely stopped the chomping and trying to get his tounge over it as his efforts were all in vain.

He never really opened his mouth though - so slightly different problem to you.

He dosn't like the myler anymore, so when I can ride him he has a loose ring french link and loose fitting cavesson and he hasn't reverted to the chomping at all (yet - touch wood!).

Not much difference between a flash and drop in my opinion, though people tend not to do drop's up too tightly as they sit lower on the top of the nose. Flash nosebands were originally designed to combine the properties of the drop and cavesson, so in theory, the flash will do more than a drop alone will.

But the less tack the better in my opinion, so if it's just his opening his mouth and crunching, a drop would be well worth a try.
 
i use a drop for schooling at home and generally use a flash for competeing! sometimes it looks better to have a flash...
i have started to use a drop all the time know when competing and schooling as my pony seems to go well in it...
he likes it better than the flash for jumping!

Archie sounds very similar to my mare! She used to be terrible for chomping on the bit but now she is more established she is so much better.
She does still try to open her mouth though, usually in the halt transitions. She pokes her nose and gets her tongue over the bit. I too considered switching from a flash to a drop but never got round to it!
If you dont mind could you please keep me updated. If it works I might have to invest in a drop.
 
I use a mexican noseband on both my horses, stops them crossing their Jaw and fine I get a bit more control without having to over bit them!
 
I nearly got a drop about a month agos because I was sick to death of my girlie pecking and fussing with her mouth when ridden and I just didnt seem to be able to get to the bottom of it.

Everytime I took her back to the stable after being ridden she was absolutely frantic to rub her nose and I must admit she would also rub her nose when ridden if given the opportunity so in a flash of crazy inspiration I took the flash off and loosened the cavesson. She was exactly the same for a couple of days and then there was a massive improvement.

It might just be worth taking it all off and giving it a try before buying a new noseband.
