Howdy guys.

Re the coughing scenario, sorry to bore you all!! Red finished his anti b's on friday!

Rode him yesterday(sunday), he was ok. Coughed 3 times (in trot)at the start then no coughing at all again and i rode for 20 mins. Only did 2 trots about a lap of the school on both reins.

Today i rode and no coughs at all, he was like a coiled spring though so i did as much warm up in walk as i could without him exploding about 10 mins then went in to trot for a couple of laps, no coughs, i only did a couple of laps of trot at a time with a lot of walk inbetween, i had 2 canters one on each rein for about 1/2 a circle each (not much at all) and in the canters he was snorting as if he had something up his nose! None of this in trot or walk though! I only rode for about 25 mins.

I left him and he was fine, full of the joys of spring and put him back out in to the field rugged with a lw.

When i came back tonight to put him to bed he has a bloody nose!! Still full of it, hungry and bright in himself.

I totally freaked out, none of my horses have ever had nose bleeds!

Im so scared have i damaged him? Have i done too much too soon? Why has he bled?

Does he need more time off? (hes had 2 weeks off now)

Any info/opinions on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys

xxxx *from a very worried MB*

I wouldnt say you have overdone things no. However, it is obviously telling you he isnt quite over it so I would take things even easier for a while.
Did he bleed from one nostril or 2? If its both it changes things a bit, generally means it is coming from the lungs. Sometimes they can bleed from both if the sinuses are inflamed, did you scope him to see what was down there/was this where the infection was? If just one then I wouldnt worry, is probably just caused by the infection he has had.
We have had horses do this in the past and we have always found it best to rough them off for 3 months, totally knocks it on the head with no reoccurences. Sometimes these things can go on and on. However, I dont know what you do with/how fit your horse is, but maybe just gentle hacking for a few weeks might be ok.

Thanks hun for the reply

It was one nostril, not a lot of blood and had stopped bleeding when i got down.

I sponged it off with warm water and will see if it has happened again in the morning, if not i will give him a couple of days off probably till the weekend then have some slow walk hacks.

Problem is i would love to hack during the week but nights are drawing in so soon now i darent go out! We have nowhere without going quite a way (about an hour ride) and i find it boring for him to walk around and around in the school but just wanted to do some 20 min sessions with him to get him in to it.

Do you think the walking will help for a while - i think im taking ti too fast because he looks full of it!!

Seeing as hes just getting over something, and being one nostril, I really wouldnt worry too much.
I would just take things steady, whether it be walk, trot or canter. A little of each should be fine for short periods. A general rule we use is not to sweat them up for 2 weeks, just do enough to tick them over.

I wouldn't worry too much, my mare has the ocassional nosebleed, in fact she had one after the Jumpcross on Sunday. They are never anything major just one little trickle or like the one on Sunday where my OH said it looked like someone had sprayed her nostril with paint

I have asked the vet about it in the past and they have told me not to worry about it unless they become more frequent and there is more blood.

Agree with the others - don't worry too much - my lad bleeds when it's hot or he's been hoonying round the field - vets checked him, been scoped, only ever trickle from one nostril and the vet says not to worry.

I agree too, I am in the process of getting my mare's nosebleed endoscoped and I wish I hadn't bothered, they scoped her about a month ago and found nothing in the left side of her head or her guttural pouch (she only bleeds a trickle from her left nostril each time) and now they want her back as soon as she bleeds again to find out where exactly it is coming from. She bled last week (unfortunately out of office hours so couldn't take her in) and it is almost certainly coming from a weak blood vessel literally just inside the nostril. Absolutely nothing to worry about, but it cost me £86 (for one scope, may still be having the second...!) to not find out what it was, and me and my YO with a torch up Maiden's nose found out what it was for free! If it isn't a lot of blood and it doesn't happen very often, I wouldn't be at all worried.
