nosebleed :S

Brought my pony in from the field this evening and he had dry blood around his nostrils :S ive been to check him since and there is no fresh blood. Not sure how he did it, hes never had one before. Do they happen as easily as we get nosebleeds?? what causes them etc??? help!!

Hi

He could have blown his nose too hard and caused a small bloody vessel to burst, or knocked himself.

Its not normally too much to worry about as long as its not gushing blood or been bleeding a while.

Just keep an eye im sure everything will be ok.

Oooh, I'm glad you asked and I'm hoping you'll remind me, because I've forgotten; One (of the 2 options) means blood is coming from lungs (bad) and the other is a burst blood vessel (not bad) Or have I got that wrong?

I was going to say - if it is only blood from one nostril, then it's usually not serious, as it is only the upper airway involved.
If there is bleeding from both nostrils, it is more of a concern, being from the lower airways, and a vet should have a look at the pony.
Of course lots of horses bleed during exercise, but the blood usually remains internally...I seem to recall one endoscopy study which said that something like 73% of racehorses were found to be 'bleeders'.

Doesn't mean much.
If the blood was in both nostrils, I'd get him checked by the vet, if I were you.

worth getting the vet to scope him. bleeders can be a nightmare!

if there a bleeder they cough loads. it aint that serious drugs can be given t then for it, well he racehorses that were bleeders had drugs given to them everyday

More than likely it's nothing to worry about, but keep an eye on it - if you notice blood in the nostrils on repeated occasions it would be worth getting your vet out to check.

Rarely horses can get fungal infections of the guttural pouch in the head which can erode through the carotid artery, the horse will bleed to death in front of your eyes. Some horses will have small minor bleeds beforehand. However if diagnosed and treated early it can be cured before catastrophic damage occurs. So if it happens again don't ignore it, just in case.
