A horse i ride keeps getting nosebleeds down one nostril, he must have had about 5 in the last two weeks, it is a steady trickle which sometimes goes on for half an hour, he is bright and well otherwise. I am a little concerned but the owner isnt, so just wondered what it might be so i could mention more to the owner. thanks. This is not after excercise, just coming in from field, usually in the morning.
 
thats quite a few in two wks. It could be just a small blood vessel which when he sneses or uses extra exertion like form work or canter round field can cause it to start bleeding again. Or it could be a sign of something else going on especially if it only been in last few wks and not before. when mine did this once she had a lower resp infection (no other symptoms) and then a few years later did similar thing and was diagnosed with RAO.
I wouldn't be overly concerend by it but I would encourage owner to talk to vet about it just in case it is something i would also lay of extional work for a wk or so. gd luck
 
Having had a couple of nosebleeds in horses i was told by vet

Providing bleed is only a trickle and from one nostril...
1 nosebleed dont panic
2 nosebleeds- keep an eye
3 talk to vet.

So if horse had had 5 then really the vet needs to have a look.

When both nostrils bleed, it can indicate bleeding from the lungs which is far more serious as far as i am aware.
 
I don't want to alarm you but this horse should be looked out. At friend of mine lost her mare a few years ago following a spate of nose bleeds from one nostril... She has a tumour in her sinus.

She went to horspital and had it removed but sadly it was very aggresive and returned within weeks.
 
thanks guys, i am slightly concerned as i am not a person to call the vet willy nilly, but as i said its not mine so it is difficult for me.
 
ring the vet it is better to be safe than sorry it could be a number of things high blood pressure sists in the lung or nose or even bust blood vessels!
 
In February this year i lost my 18.2 irish draught x tb. I went to give him his breakfast and noticed his nose bleeding (not heavily) from one nostril. By lunchtime still bleeding - called vet, next day the vet performed an endoscopy as she was concerned it could be the main artery in the brain....no sign of where it was coming from, but wasnt from the main artery so sent him home with mild sedation to keep his blood pressure down, took blood samples. Blood results came back normal, but bleeds were still occuring during the week so it was decided to take him to Leahurst, they performed an endoscopy found nothing did MRI scan found nothing so they suggested to see if bleeding would stop and to bring him back in a fortnight. Bleeding did eventually stop but he became very distressed (signs of colic) back to Leahurst they gave him a stomach wash and kept him in.....seemed to improve from the Sunday to the Wednesday but by Thursday he was put on a drip, Friday, after doing liver biopsey and bone marrow biopseys they did not know what was wrong with him. Only other thing to do was a laparotomy....they were horrified to find a tumour 50 cm in diameter in his intestinal wall and secondaries to the small intestinal wall. The poor lad....it was the hardest decision ive ever had to make....let him go. All the vets and Liverpool were mortified at the news, even my own vets could not believe the outcome sorry to bore you with this long winded saga but thought it may help in some way.
