Six weeks ago my mare got a puncture wound to her knee. After lots of ups and downs she was finally healing well and we were back riding...when this morning she took a chunk out of her other knee. Well, and skinned the inside of it. :( Vet is out tomorrow morning anyway to check on the puncture wound and its not serious but honestly! I feel so bad for her and really frustrated that we are back in injury time again so soon.

Oh what a shame? How's she done this? Fallen on the road? In the field?

As with the puncture wound, it's a mystery. The pasture is huge (70 acres) and she is out with 10 geldings and 2 other mares. I suspect she has got into a scrap with somebody, I have noticed she is bullied a little by the other mares which I'm not surprised at as she is one of the oldest in the herd at 22 (although there is a 'sub-herd' of 3 other oldies, 2 of whom are older than her), and to be honest she can be a bit ornery to say the least.
She hates to be penned or in a stable but I think I may have to consider it, especially with winter coming up. I can't have her getting injured again or being bullied away from the round bales when they go out in about a month.

I'm sorry to hear this, I know how much you were looking forward to getting back to work :( I hope she recovers quickly for you. Get well soon Missy.

It's possible that she is getting into an argument with one of the others, are any of them dominant in a pushy way? Don't suppose you could sub divide the field and have a 'mature' section?
