HI all. My 5 year old didnt eat his tea last night or his brekkie this morning and not all of his tea tonight. He has been eating his haylage and he has been pooing too. Last night and tonight when I went to the yard he was stood at the back of his stable looking sorry for himself. I gave him lots of cuddles and a good groom and he seemed to perk up a little and my OH walked him around the yard but he only nibbled his tea and didnt eat it all. I gave him some carrios and apples and he ate them no problem. I dont know whats wrong with him. The vet is coming tomorrow as I want his teeth checking to see if that is it although he only had them checked in October. He is in the same routine everyday and nothing has changed apart from the horse which he is stabled next to was sold last weekend. Any ideas ?

Is he in all the time or more than normal due to the weather? is he drinking the usual amount of water, keep an eye on his droppings if they get firmer it may be that he has a slight impaction and that his feed makes him feel uncomfortable, try giving him a well soaked sloppy feed, smaller than usual and get him out moving as much as you can.
Hope the vet can help tomorrow.

i called up at the stables this morn at daft o clock 2 check him. his head was over the door whichbwas a good sign. hed drank his water and ate his net i gave last night . i gave him some real sloppy warm feed and he ate it this morn. Strange,he seems 2 b alot perkier. he goes out everyday ia a sand pen 4 3 hpurs a day in the winter ans gets plenty of exercise 2. Hopefully he is on the mend.xx thank u 4 ur tips

I have no experience of it but they can pick up sand and this can cause colic, there are products that can help if that is a possibility, hopefully he was just feeling a bit off and a nice sloppy diet will keep things moving:)

I'd just keep an eye on his water intake, and make sure his water is topped up. If you are usually feeding soaked hay and then you stop because of the possibility of ice crystals forming in the hay in the cold weather then the horse will not be having his usual intake of water. This can cause an impaction.

I had to choose last night between giving him dry haylage and hay mixed so he wouldn't get colic through ice crystals in his tubs for today (4 of them left for today) or whether to soak/dampen them as normal and risk it so he'd get his normal ratio of water. He had drunk all his water yesterday, and luckily my friend topped it up for him as I was late due to a flat car battery.

the vet is coming at 5pm. its strange he ate his sloppy breaky this morn and his carrots and apple. Id left a small lunch feed for him. I rang my OH to check on him and he said he hadnt eaten his lunch and was looking sad again :( Fingers crosse it is something simple. He is my baby

hi. she checked his teeth and temperature and listened 2 his gut and evetything was normal. she said his tummy felt cold anc asked if he has lost a companion. i told her about the horse next door to him being sold. she said it sounds like he is feelung down and feeling the cold on his tummy. so he is on hot brekkie and dinners and a duvet rug under his normal rug. he ate his tea tonight so fingers crossed. xx thank u 4 asking x

All our yard have gone funny with the hay, its the same as usual and they are turned out as usual but most if not all are only eating half the hay and my boy who is in on box rest is hardly eating any hay or haylage at all . I was told a lot of horses are doing this.

I would say if he is not better by monday I would call the vet.

hi. the vet came out friday and said he was feeling the cold. he had a big rug on but his tummy was cold.the vet said she had been 2 a lot of horses off their food. She also said he was probably feeling down from losing his friend who was in the stable next door. i bought him an under rug and he has perked up now. Just need this snow 2 go x
