So after doing a bit of shopping around for what to feed my youngster and speaking to a nutritionist at Pure Feed, I’ve bought a couple of bags of Pure Balance.

I tried giving him it for the first time today and he turned his nose up at it. What could I mix in with it that is low calorie/low sugar, which might encourage him to eat it?

People often suggest apple juice/grated apple or carrot/peppermint oil. I don’t know what that feed is like - are you feeding it wet or dry? If you aren’t adverse to adding a bit of another feed grass nuts or unmollased sugar beet always go down well!

We have used Pure Easy, as it is not packed with sugars they took a few days of adjustment. We did a slow change over from one feed to another, with a bit of speedy beet to make it more attractive.

Its just like weaning kids off needing 5 sugars in their tea!

What has he been having before? Or has he not had hard feed before? If you were already giving him feed, then just mix the original feed in with the new one to start and then gradually wean him off by reducing the amount of the original feed until he is on the new feed alone.

With horses, start small with food. Perhaps 4 ounces of feed, mixed with previously accepted feed, or with shredded carrot. Put it in front of them and walk away.
