Whilst at yard tonight my friend had heard a horse trotting on the road

next thing, Monty comes racing into the barn.
Our stupid YO had taken her 2 horses out of the field and left the field gate open which leads directly onto the road

, Monty is kept the other side of the field with electric tape. He had gone straight through the electric tape and had got out onto the road

Thank god the electric gate to the yard was not working after the high wind on Sunday and that he had the sense to come back into the yard otherwise on a narrow dark road I hate to think what could of happened

When I confronted her, she blamed her husband and said he had trouble bringing her horses in. It does'nt take 2 minates to walk back and shut the bl**dy gate though, does it?
I'm now very concerned that our horses are just not safe there if they can be that stupid to leave a gate open

Sorry rant over

Things happen, I've done it before, as I'm sure lots of other people have, our ponies escaped after my OH left the field gate open and ended up half a mile away before we even noticed!
Just have to be grateful no-one was hurt; and check the gates always !

Bloody pratt, I would be very unhappy with the situation, if her dopey husband cant manage the horses he should get help, not leave the gate open

this is one of the reasons I left my previous yard, because they refused to shut the yard gate and horses got out on the road, and YO's partner would try and bring 3 or 4 horses in at once and would sometimes let go of one, or forget to shut the gate - I just couldn't trust them.

I actually would have been ripping, You dont just leave a gate open because your having problems bringing in horses , To me thats unacceptable, The way I see it is that if there is other horses in the same field that your bringing your horse out of , then there should be 2 people to cope with bringing in the horse , 1 person to take said horse out and the other person to keep rest of the horses back from the gate and to SHUT the gate securely .

Your YO should have known better .

at my old yard we had a situation where a young girl who was helping out hadn't secured the gate properly. The field is only about 200 yards up the road from the stable yard and being winter they all wanted to come in.One horse barged through and came galloping along the road closely followed by 4 others. The scary thing about it is the field gate is on a bend and it was pitch black with no lights so I hate to think what would have happened if a car had been coming along at that point. Our YO went absolutely mental, which was rightly so,but he did apologise to the girl who was totally distraught by it,as like he said someone should have been with her to ensure the gate had been closed properly. It wasn't an easy gate to shut properly. As a result a new gate was put up and a second gate inside the field was also erected as a secure way to ensure no further escapees.

Apart from that, the YO has a legal duty of care, if something happened they would be liable as hell, it's idiots like this who get ALL OF US higher insurance premiums.

I went for a substantial period of last winter in a similar situation. My horse was getting out, thankfully not onto the road but into a narrow corridor between fields that is used for bringing horse in and making it impossible for people to get past. We couldn't work out how she was doing it until the person in the next door field admitted that she wasn't shutting the gate, just putting it to because she didn't have a free hand when bringing two horses in. We lost a lot of sleep over this, caused alot of unpleasantness on the yard because apparently it was my horses fault for not staying put behind the gate. YO knew it was happening but didn't do anything about it because OP had been there years longer than me. Needless to say I'm now liveried somwhere else where my horse gets individual turnout and so I don't have to rely on other people shutting the gate.

If I was you I'd look for another yard. If they don't see anything wrong with their behaviour they are likely to do it again at some point and I can't imagine what it would be like to find D had been let out onto a road. I know other people on here will think I'm overreacting but having been there, never again
