My old boy who suffers from sweet itch has spent the 2 previous summers out without a fly rug & not rubbed (mainly because our grazing was so high up) & was sporting a lovely full mane & tail, this year as ive had to move his grazing to somewhere lower down & a bit wetter, so i invested in a nice new Shires fly rug, its a lovely looking rug & so far has done the job & stopped him rubbing, however the bl00dy rug has rubbed half his mane out. Im totally gutted, it took ages to get it to grow back & look nice again, im half tempted to contact shires & complain, but then again i do appreciate different rugs fit some horses better, his old Loveson fly rug i had was brilliant & never rubbed his mane, im now wishing id gone for another Loveson.
I guess a rather pointless post, sorry, just a bit gutted :(

Its not just midges that affect him, any flies do, he comes out in hives all over if hes not rugged in a area with lots of flies, i tried Equineem years ago & it didnt really seem do the job.

My girl gets annoyed at flies and kicks and swishes more than she grazes. Someone gave me their old, spare sweet itch goody which was fantastic, although I could never afford one, so I went for a very similar one from Premier Equine and it was brill. I prefer all in ones as every rug and neck I have used has rubbed her mane, where as all in ones don't seem to.

This is an all in one, i bought a rug with a detachable neck once & i wont make the same mistake again, they are really pants! Looks like im going to have to go rug shopping for him again.
