Must pull myself together!!
One of my 'charges' is off to the sales. Waved her off, and felt myself welling up like a leaking tap!!!
I gave her a kiss on her nose, and she snuggled into me, and then put her top lip up like I stunk - lol. Lovely filly and I wished her all the best.

Over the past 3 years I've been working at this place, I like all the horses, and grow fond of them. I tell all the youngsters about being in training, and how to behave and they will be champions one day and I'll follow their career.
This filly has been a total sweetie, and I'd like to think some of what I've said she has appreciated, and she knew it was farewell for now.

Hey Ho, one less box to muck out tomorrow.

Bless you! id be the same, I couldn't ever part with my horses, could never work with them either as I would find it far too hard! sounds like shes had a great start in life and at least you will be there to keep track of her in her future career!

So many views to this post and only one reply?

There is nothing to be ashamed of in becoming particularly attached to one of your charges. I hope she goes on and does you proud.

That is sad - is she off to Tattersalls? I am going up for a look (not buying - LOL) tell me her lot number if so.

I've ridden for other people all my life, never had my own, so I've had a lot of horses moved on from under me, or moved on myself. Some of them really get under your skin even though you sometimes wish they wouldn't! There are hunters from twenty years ago I still miss, no idea what happened to them. And one of my more recent shares - I still see his farrier occasionally so I keep up with his news but I'd loved to have bought him, old donkey that he was.

I waved off 3 mares I have known since September and 2 horses I have looked after for 5 plus years, they left at 2 and I didn't stop wailing in till 7 lol
Hope u r ok, who knows u might have her back when she has retired from racing xxx

I think racing grooms are the unsung heroes of the sport. Only they truly know the horses and vice versa. I would never be able to do racehorses, the fear of them not coming home would terrify me and as for how some of them end up out of racing makes my blood boil.

OP, I hope your filly has a wonderful life and does you proud. Nothing wrong in being attached to your charges.

Ah, Fools Motto, I think it’s wonderful you care, but I nearly shed a tear on your behalf! I hope she ends up with people like I saw today at Towcester races. There was a lovely bay mare being led around the paddock, and when she turned her head towards her handler, the girl looked up at her, said something soppy to her, and patted her. They happened to be passing us again when the jockey mounted: he gave her a pat and said, “Hello poppet!” I know I’m a softy, but I thought that was lovely.
