The lady that organises the worming on our yard told me tonight that they are all being wormed on Monday coming and that they shouldn't be ridden for 24 hrs after ??

In my 20 or so years of horses I have never heard of this ?? Can anyone enlighten me as to why?

Obviously this works out OK for her as her horses day off is Tuesday !

News to me. I always carry on as normal after worming. Does the wormer come with a leaflet? It would say on that if there are recommendations, wouldn't it?

I've just read the Noromectin box and it doesn't say anything about resting.

Curiously it says it can kill dogs, especially collies. And tortoises. Not relevant to your question OP but curious.

I wasn't intending to give it to my dog, btw. And I don't have a tortoise. :D:D:D

That's a bit weird!! Wonder how many people have felt the need to worm a tortoise in order for them to write it on the leaflet lol.

Getting back to the OP though, I did hear this when I was very young but dont know anyone who does it

Nope I tend to ride then worm after and ride as normal the next day. Tend to ride day after vaccs to but normally just a gentle hack but couldnt this year as vet said day off after fall but other wise would have done.

Could see that if your horse had a major worm burden maybe but for those that dont if they seem ok then I wouldnt worry.

The stables local to me used to give their horses the day off after worming,
but I don't know which wormers they used, or how frequently they wormed, but all the horses used to scour badly after being done.
Ive never had a problem with riding my own horses the day after worming.
Kx

I've never been told that one! All I remember being told is that I shouldn't get my horses sweaty for 24 hours after their vaccinations. Because mine are both due in August when it's warm they usually get the day off after vaccinations but I've never done it for wormer.

I was told this once after worming one of the RS horses and planned on using it later. I checked with two other knowledgeable people who said they had never heard of that :P so proceeded to use her later after double checking the packaging :P

Never heard this unless a horse is actually riddled with worms! I can understand horse will have a stomach ache from hell if so.

In normal worming routine, I'd just carry on as normal. Oh sorry, forgot you're not allowed!!! :D:D:D

I always thought this was the case, as the RS where I grew up the horses were never worked after they were wormed "in case they got colic". It was only till last year when I asked my vet whether or not this was the case that I realised it was not, still won't ride though when I've wormed....

No reason with modern wormers to have a day off after.

Once upon a long time ago wormers were horrible and the horse often needed a break while they dealt with the effect of the worms being purged out of their system.

That would make sense and I undertsand about not riding after annual jabs. It's my sharers day to ride the day after they are wormed so will tell her to ride with my blessing and tell mrs know it all wher eto shove it ( politely of course )

I agree with her. I find the horses to be more of a handful the day after the wormer is given to them. My instructor won't teach them the following day!

I think it gives my sister's horse a bit of a sore belly but it puts him on his toes- the only time he's ever fun to hack is after a good worming session!

Interestingly my ex was a game keeper, and his gun dog used to go hyper the day after she was wormed! She was normally a very quiet placid little thing!

Somewhere in my distant memory I do remember hearing this. I seem to remember it being due to horses do droppings say whilst out hacking ( at the time probably working pulling a cart) & someones (hungry) dog or a stray eats it (eurgh but it does happen) it can have a very nasty death! Not saying I believe it but hey thats how it used to be in't olden days!
