In my freezing living room - that looks gooooood!!!

BUT -This is where I don't understand dressage people! He is a horse! Why is he bandaged? Don't take offence just wondering...

er.....because id just ridden?! and he's too precious not to protect his legs when worked? he's doing decent amounts of lateral work, playing with changes, and starting pi/pa in earnest, a lot of potential for clipping or scuffing himself, which would mean weeks off if it gets infected/cracked/sore.

why take the risk?

Oooh! Heat lamps! So jealous!

I'm saving at the moment to build a barn next year. Standing outside in the rain in sub zero temperatures this winter, I decided I'm getting heat lamps in the barn. But not the ones with mood lighting. I've seen the price of those

What do you do in tests then just take the risk?

i dont think its a case of one horse being more precious than another, more weighing up pros V cons.....my dressage horse is unlikely to be worked for more than an hour, the surface is unlikely to get inside boots and rub, they are unlikely to slip.
for a hunter, the risk of all the above is far greater so unless i had something that over reached or brushed, id hunt minus boots too because the risk of abrasion injuries is so high.

for tests, yes, have to chance it, but that IS only 5/6 mins where as a normal work out is 45mins-an hour, so id just never ever school without leg protection.

i hacked fully booted/bandages too, but dont do a lot of fast work, if any, and dont go off road much in winter when teh risk of slippage/mud irritation is at its highest so again, weighing up pros V cons.

...back to the heat lamps. They look amazing!!! Are they a DIY job or proper ones (just asking because wouldn't mind trying to do something like that on a shoestring myself!!!).

they are bog standard marque heaters, but they were installed by a proper electrician, because dads too busy and i have no concept of electrical wiring! if you had a handy OH i think you could do it yourself.

CS was a bit alarmed to start with, think he thought he was being slow roasted lol!!!

A yard just up the road did the same, saved them ££££'s and is quite straightforward set up providing like you day, you've had them fitted by a sparky, not sure why more people don't do it to be honest, still trying to talk our YO into.

Does look warm - spoilt horse or what!!! But then, if you can, why not... Meg is spoilt, she knows it and can devour a packet of polos in one day just to prove she is spoilt!! - My mum gets so cross with me... lol
As for the bandages, I know ''most'' dressage horses do get wrapped up in lots of bandages, and for that reason alone, its what I expect to see, but from a 'horse' point of view, it does look, errmmm, 'not right' IMHO (can't think of the right word really).
ETS - are those 'sausage boots' you use too - or something else.... (the tube around the pastern?)

suppose they are much more precious than my hunter. :)

No of course not, its just personal preference for different people. I dont boot up to hunt(apart from over reach) but I do boot and bandage my incredibly accident prone 4 yo when schooling. Just each to their own.

PS- Love the heat lamps, I cant believe its a DIY job its brilliant. Hvaing recently moved to a yard with this luxury I dont know how I ever lived without it lol :D

We have a wash box and some heat lights that can be raised up and down. They also have the red ones that are good for the horses muscles/back?

I've never used them and really forget they are there, until I take Otto for a bath and no matter how high they are raised he always bangs his head on them! I'm sure he does it on purpose! He is 17.2 though!

So I went in the wash box today to see how they worked, oh and they don't!! So I'll have a chat with someone so I can use them, on Otto not me!

On the bandage thingy...When I ride I have to have overreach boots on the back legs and I'm 'always' told I've got them on the wrong feet. I put them on the back because when we started lateral work he clumsily cut his coronet band quite badly and it took forever to heal. So now I have them on the back BUT also I put them on the front so people don't think I've got them on the wrong feet....Now they just think I'm an idiot! lol

Yep, dead sheep over reach boots. My horse also always wears bandages and over reach boots ( again of the dead sheep variety) whether he is ridden or in the fielf ( boots) he also has magnetic stable boots for over night. I warm up in them for dressage and take them off at the last minute. He then has them straight back on when he has finished his test. They are too expensive to risk damaging.
When I worked as a groom at international level the horses were not allowed to leave the box without some form of a boot on, just in case they leapt about.

PS, mine would match my saddlecloth at all times too!!

They look great Princess, are they specifically put in an area with no bedding? How far away from the horse are the lamps? Would they fit in a standard stable (not currently in use) or would the horse be fried? Do you use just 2? Thanks :)

that did make me chuckle, when mums grey horse was seriously schooling pi/pa he wore over reaches behind too, and i also got odd looks at clinics etc!

Hornby-they are in my wash box, which is approx 14 x 12 but is nearly open fronted, so i think they would be fine in a stable, they dont get uncomfortably hot.
yes just 2.
Mine are *just* above horse head height, but set to the side and because i cross tie my horses they wouldnt be able to bump their head on them.that way they reach the back AND sides not just directly over the back area.

Ohhh I love them and want some lol

I bandage up when schooling and boot up for hacking/jumping/xc .etc .etc. ... As others have said I would rather take a few minutes to bandage up then get a horsey with poorly legs ;) plus it looks pretty too lol
