Hmm,

Well i have a horse that is retired with navicular and his legs swell up if he stays in so because of this he lives out 24/7 and is very happy.

He is fed and hayed daily, checked twice a day and has a large stable that has straw down, with the door left open so he and his filed mate can use it as a shelter.

Ok, so now you know the set up.

Yesterday morn he was fine but i noticed a small amount of heat in his fetlock but nothing major, no swelling, minimal heat in the hoof...

Fast forward to last night he was very lame, in the dark, with no electric on site making looking closer impossible.

No more swelling, heat etc just lame.
I gave him 2 Danilon (he has 1 a day anyway for his navicular) and watched him for a while and although lame he seemed happy and was moving round the field to eat his hay and chase his pony!

Farrier was out today and confirmed my suspision that he has pus in the foot - but, due to where it is they couldnt dig it out as its under his frog.

This means that he will be lame til i can get the pus out.

Ive left him out with a poultice on but cant help thinking maybe i should have left him in?
But then he would have the swelling he gets when left in as well as the abcess?

And it doesnt help that im away working so my boyfriend will be poulticing him and looking after him.

I'm shore he is better off out if he gets swelling in his legs. It is fine to leave a horse out with an abcess i have done it before.
in 2008 Lucy got a very bad foot abcess (the vet at first thought she had broken her leg she was so lame). At the time i was recovering from a broken hip and my evil boss wouldn't let anyone else on the yard to do my horses but also wouldn't let the groom she had in to do hers do mine either. I was still on crutches and non weight baring at the time and Lucy had been shoved right out the back with the young cob i had at the time who could not be left on his own (boss would not put any of hers out with him). I had to leave Lucy out with a poultice on i got her one of those poltice boots and it worked realy well at keeping it on. I somehow managed to change her poltice everyday and she got better. Anyway i hope that my waffeling makes you feel a little better and i hope your boy is feeling better soon.

horses with absesses are better off out , moving around and walking on it painfull as it looks will help irritate it and get the pus to burst out. You have done the right thing.

You have done the right thing - he will be happier doodling around out rather than stood in and swelling up.

I would have done the same as you. I put the poultice on and tape with vetwrap. Then I put a nappy on the foot and use duct tape to hold it on. If the horse is being turned out (favoured option) we then duct tape some plastic shavings bag over to keep the wet and mud out.

v_k-my girl got an abcess less that 48 hours after she went on loan!! They were very worried and got vet and farrier out. She's on the mend, but it's such bad luck isn't it!! Again, its not in a reachable place, so just got to wait really

Good luck.
