... I didn't see it myself but wish I had...

Yesturday I was having a quiet hour indoors watching James Bond with a couple of dogs curled up with me on the sofa when my mother came bounding in all of a tither. She reported thus...

She had just seen her first live fox bounding up my driveway... It had over taken her as she was pulling up to visit (and swop dogs around). Said fox was then followed by terrier one, terrier two jumped out of car window to join in. Then then continued the chase through the chooks who were in the paddock. Chooks saw terriers 1, 2 and foxy racing up the paddock and not wanting to miss out all 9 chooks started chasing fox and terriers with wings a flapping...

Have I flouted the law by inadvertantly hunting with chickens? Does it count if they are not hounds? By this point terrier 3 buggared off down a rabbit hole to dig as she couldn't be bothered and terrier 4 just about managed to get up off the sofa after being out all night anyway...

Said fox did get away so the girls will have no bush to mount in their coop... :)

Te he he!!! Can you imagine it! Madam you are being detained for hunting with more than two chooks... :)

They did look very pleased with themselves when I went out to call them back. The terriers took much longer to respond and didn't look quite so happy to be returning!

I thought I should keep them in today but figured that actually if they can go galavanting off after a fox yesturday I am sure they can go off and join the fray again today!

So anoyed that I didn't see it would have been fantastic if a little heart in mouth to watch! Brave little chookadees!

"Madam", how very interesting.;)

Your only flirting because you want my chooks for when the season restarts!!! He he he!! You would have to train them up to the horn though - at the moment they only come back if you call out "ladies" or "girls". Not so sure that most "masters of the fox chooks" would feel comfortable doing that and it may have an adverse effect on members of the field! They also do not run as fast as your average hound despite giving it a good go!

I know I shall probably loose them one day when the fox realises that they are not actually as nasty as their squawk and an easy lunch but even still! Not bad for a bunch of tatty old ex battery birds is it!!! Credit where credit is due!

Bless 'em I am proud of my ladies!

Sooooo ..... who was FM'ing at this little lawn meet? Surely someone should be preparing a little "advice" card to chooky followers re. etiquette? And what about dress code for your chooks? Presumably the normal courtesies apply? Coz you'll have to rig them up properly before cubbing starts won't you? Dunno where you'll get breeches that fit though ......

Dunno where you are in the country, but if you needed any additional whippers-in, am sure my two terriers would be delighted to assist anytime. Sounds like a real hooley of a chase - fab.

It could create a whole new following couldn't it!

I am across a bit from you but my girls really do live the life of reilly! They have permission to go across 4 or 5 fields that back onto my garden so I don't bother with fences and they have a ball!

They did get a few wallops when they attempted to do Mr Foxes job for him when the ladies first arrived but have learnt (slowly) over the past year that the chookys are not for munching! Thankfully all chooks have survived both terrier and fox now! I guess its no wander they are such plucky little ladies! First a tiny cage and then a selection of coops to choose from with a paddock to roam round, a few fruit trees dropping delights down through out the summer and cooked brekkie in the winter! All that and they don't even have to lay so many eggs!

My girls always welcome others into any fray they are in at the time as long as they pull their weight and don't nick the warm spot on the sofa or too much douvet at bed time! Visitors are normally even welcome to partake in any cheweys they can find and the food bowl as long as they do not sit on Momma's lap! Just please do not expect mine to teach yours anything other than general misbehaviour... If its raining/ cold or the scent is bad they come to call at all other times forget it and pick up your shovel!

PMSL - brillant!

That is now one very confused fox. He will never be brave enough to look a chicken in the beak again. ;)

Like the idea of MFC's How about MFD's as well?

I have a flock of Ducks - maybe we could combine the fiesty nature of the little red hens with the swimming ability of some agile ducks? No fox in the country would be safe

I know the major draw back is that they poor wee things might not able to keep up with the horses

However we could revert to the terrier panniers for each member of the hunt instead where everyone would carry a primed assortment of chicken and ducks for immediate deployment when required.....

Padds,

that wasn't hunting, it was a pre-emptive strike, to protect your poultry enterprise, and you used a team of noisy, but highly trained :)D) specialists!

How's life? We've heard precious little from you in yonks.

Alec. x
