Hi I could do with some advice, sorry it's going to be long

My lab is 3yrs old and a good working lab, well bred ftch for 5gens on both sides, a friend has a lab who also is well bred both are health tested and he has people wanting pups off her. He wants to use our dog as they would compliment each other personality wise etc.

I am not sure what to say- originally I said yes but now having doubts as worried it may change my boy and affect his behaviour. I don't think it will affect him out shooting as he is so focussed on the guns and birds but I'm worried about his everyday behaviour and aggresion.
He is a big softy currently if a dog growls at him he retreats which I don't have a prob with I don't really want to loose that.

So to those who have stud dogs have they changed? If so did you find ways to overcome any negatives which meant they still live a happy loving life?

Thanks in advance

I have had and used a great many dogs for stud purposes, and never had one which went through any personality change, following doing what came naturally to them. If your dog is manageable now when he's at work, he will be manageable afterwards. Covering a bitch is a perfectly natural event, and it's what they naturally do! Sexual intercourse doesn't change you and I, so why would it affect a dog? :)

Under no circumstances would I consider castrating a dog, without there being a specific need. Many consider it to be mutilation, and in certain Continental Countries, it's illegal without there being clear medical grounds.

My lovely sadly dead old boy was used a fair bit he remained a lovely character it changed him not one bit .
I was advised to only let him line bitches here so they came to him he never went walk about .
I have his daughter and see his pups and grand pups out and about it's lovely ,although I did disgrace my self by crying when I saw a particularly similar grandson just after he had died .

Thanks
Amymay he was bought and there was always the chance of being used at stud- however he wouldn't be castrated if he isn't used tho as there is no need, if he becomes too interested in females post mating then he would unfortunately have to be castrated. I feel he needs his testosterone on some shoot days- it helps keep him brave!

I have had a lot of people say today not to worry he will be fine (OH says it will do him good to have a bit more guts anyway as he is a big wuss) so I think we will go for it!
The bitch will come to us as I also was told they should always come to him so that he only thinks about that if at home not that it's something he gets to do when he goes out.

Thank you for your experiences.
