Not sure what to make of this - any ideas?

Hi, we’ve just been to check on our pony and noticed this strange wrinkled, bald patch on the hind leg. It feels very hot to touch.
It wasn’t like that this morning and there don’t appear to be any obvious causes for it in the field.
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas?
Thank you

Where is it on the leg? Horses seem to have a protective mechanism where the hair will pull out rather than break the skin, if the horse is kicked or hits/catches itself on something. It looks like the leg got caught in something and was pulled free. What fencing do you have?

Thank you for your replies. The horse wasn’t rugged, we do have electric wire fencing in part of the field but the pony won’t go anywhere near it. The rest of the fencing is simple post & rail. We checked all the fencing but couldn’t see anything that she might have been caught in. Someone did suggest a possible fungal infection, there is some heat and swelling. Mystery continues...

My vote is on a rub/ friction burn of some type but presumably there wouldn’t be any harm in slapping a bit of Canesten on it if you’re wondering about a fungal infection? It wouldn’t have been my first thought though.

It does look like a scrape. Could it be from teeth? Or a glancing blow from a hoof? I've seen similar (also hot/raised when fresh) on my gelding after rough play and bullying. The heat should go after a day or two, and a scab will form, if that's what it is.

My horse used to get that. On his chest. He was an itchy horse and used to rub like weaving on the fence. It looks exactly the same, the Puckered skin and all. Took me ages to realise what it was! (Caught in the act!)
