Brief back ground. I have a definitely retired TB, (Uni) He has kept a few friends horses company, lost his last friend in December so i turned my other horse (Ziggy) away with him to keep him company and i didnt really enjoy riding him anyway.
My partner has been paying to rent a field down the road and they have been very happy and chilled out there.
My main worry apart from the money was there there is no shelter, so come summer if we get some really hot days there is no choice but to stand out in it. So I'd always said it was temporary and had kind of planned to call it a day with the TB and bring the other home....

However, I have lost my horse at home so have a free stable right now that it seems silly not be be using whilst paying to keep elsewhere. I don't have room for both, I could cope in summer with hard ground and hay but not winter.

The TB is fine on any grass etc, The other is fat. I've fenced the field off where they are so they have little grass, feed the first more and am trying to diet Ziggy, so in a way whilst they are doing great together they are not ideal companions anyway.

At home, since loosing the other horse life has been very peaceful! I have one horse, two little ponies and my neighbours tiny old mare. they are now all turned out together and seem very happy. Ideally I'd not want to ruin that but, I dont think i have a lot of choice.

So I need to decide which one comes home and which go's elsewhere (paying for one is easier) I've got potentially two places close by to consider.
Uni, the easiest to have around really. He's a bit of a grouch but wont go out of his way to ever be nasty to the others, not much grass here but he will come in during the day so can hay hay/feed- he's probably be the perferred option of the other horses here if they could speak. I can't ride him so would never feel pressured or guilty about not doing anything with him.

Zig- Is really my favourite, I miss the nice him being round but he can be a complete PITA, randomly unsettled, pacing and calling. Might push the others around, not all the time but will keep herding one around at bringing in time or whatever. He's ok, been with the ponies for ages and no problem really but I have to be careful to get them in bang on time and if anyone is on the yard before me he will start. I have to admit its less stressful not having him outside the door 24/7! he's a bit demanding, but then he is also the sweetest cuddliest friendliest one of the lot.
However he's (VERY) fat, He could do maybe with doing something however much i dislike it! or at least to try again before officially calling it a day.

Both love being stabled, both hate being in flies, both will need at least front shoes on here. Both would also be happy enough to carry on as they are. I plan to bring them both home coming up for the day, boosters are due and i will ask the vet to have a quick check and trot up as they are so chilled i never really see them move more than wandering round and theres no where to trot up where they are.

I'll have to give notice anyway so its not a huge hurry- which would you take where 🤷‍♀️

By 'go', I've read it as find another yard or field for them, is that right? Not sell/loan out or PTS - just wanted to check I understood that right.

I would bring Ziggy home & put Uni in livery/rent another place for him.

It might be stressful at times having Z at home but a stressy horse on someone else's yard or at someone else's field is even more stressful when you might not have full control.

Id probably livery the one that's easier. It's hard work being a customer with a horse that's a bit of a twit

Can you buy a field shelter ,say a mobile one on skids so it wont need pp and put it up in therented field? ? or look at all the horses and ponies and reduce numbers by two or three so that they can all be at home ?

Opt for the one who can already go into your home routine with the least hassle. Livery the one you ride.

I was also thinking mobile shelter or temporary lean to with decent fly rugs.
Otherwise bring them all home and separate as necessary with electric fence. Swap stable day / night between two. Use the rent money to buy hay.
Livery will add cost and time not to mention stress!

Trying to cover all points!
When i say call it a day, I have planned loosely to pts. I've had him way longer retired than ridden and had said I'd give him a short lovely retirement and pts. However, Its easy to say and i keep moving the goal post. In truth I'm not going to pts while he is field happy. I would never loan/sell. He looks fabulous and would be a very easy horse to jump on, get going and sell as a riding horse. He is in fact neurological.

I don't want any of them on livery as such, turn out is very important for all and most yards round here have very limited or are full livery etc. The one place i have found is a large field with 4 other retiree's. Its poo picked and hay'd There is a lot of natural shelter from tree's, they have a fenced off hardstanding in the gateway so i can feed/farrier etc.

I'd love to put a shelter in the current field and they are both happy there but I dont have a few £££ free to do it myself and the guy who owns the field kept saying one would be provided but so far nothing, I'm hesitant to push too much as i dont want him to spend a fortune when chances are we wont be there long.

No one would have to manage Zig as I will be the one doing him, He is super easy to do everything with and ive not actually seen him stress where he is now, just at home :( apparently he wasnt like it with previous owner either.

I could switch day/night stable sharing but did it once temporarily and its bit of a nightmare. Also the fields wont cope being grazed 24/7. I don't pay for hay/straw (or I really couldnt even consider them all!)

Ponies wise two are in their mid/late 30's so won't be around forever.
Ideally I'd get a shelter, Mr P would continue to pay for them both to stay where they are, the guys at home could stay as they are, Ziggy would suddenly loose weight without restricting Uni too much and we'd all be cheery!

Its pickling my brain :D

I have some out in a field with no shelter. I am not worried because in the 40 degree summer a few years ago, my ponies chose to stand around the water trough in the blazing sun all day, in preference to standing under the nice leafy trees with shade that were a few metres away. They survived just fine. So I no longer worry overly about shelter so long as no one is being sunburned and there is plenty of water.

I wouldn’t be too exercised by this factor, either: have had two, successive, plonkers choose to stand, hangdog, by the gate in blazing sun (also driving winter rain!), when there’s a pristine field shelter eight yards away.
Having said that, both always keen to get inside their stables, also do go in the shelter, just not when you’d expect or want them to!
Buy a mobile shelter you could bring home? or sell on to the landowner when you leave? bequeathe in lieu of rent?
