my mare has got a weak near hind. shes normally fine but every now and then she doesnt track up with just that leg. ive had the vet out and he has no idea what it could be. it usually lasts about a week and then goes again.

i really dont know what to do about it. i dont want her to be in pain.

she has a bit of muscle thickening in the pastern of that leg but shes not sore at all when i feel it, nor is there any heat/swelling in any part of the leg.

would magnetic therapy boots do anything for her? ive never used them but im willing to give anything a try if thats what you'd suggest

When you say your vet has no idea why she goes lame, do you mean he has investigated with scans, nerve blocks, xrays etc etc or that he trotted her up and looked at her and said "no idea" (which is what a friends vet did). If it is the former you could politely request a referal to a lameness specialist as there is almost certainly a reason for this. If it is the latter I would change vets.

Ditto the above. Often gait problems come from the back so that is worth looking into. Your vet needs to do a proper lameness work-up, look at the back and then decide on further tests. If he has done all this and can't find anything, then as above I think you need a referal to one of the big vet hospitals (e.g. AHT).

definitely not her back as had physio out yesterday and her back is fine.

vet has never furthered it as whenever he came back to have another look she was sound again. its only happened twice before, this is the third time (in 10 months).

so i think i'll have a chat with my mum about getting some xrays etc done. we should be about to claim them on insurance, right?
