Hi,

OH and I are planning to move Nottingham way as soon as son finishes school. At the moment we live in Essex. My parents are in Notts, so have given them the task of starting to looking for land to rent for the horses. At home, Essex rider is a good place to look for places, but can anyone tell me the local Notts magazines to look in, any tack shops they can visit etc? Parents are not horsey!

Sorry :-o

We are looking within a 15 mile radius of Nottingham itself, as company I work for have a depot there, and ideally I'd like a transfer. Mum and Dad are just outside Mansfield. We have seen properties we like the look of in Mansfield Woodhouse.

I don't know north notts but can recommend Notts Leicestershire border. We are close to Vale View equestrian centre and are very lucky to have loads on our door step - BD, BE, Ayelsford XC, Field Farm XC, Newton XC, loads of unaff comps, Quorn and Belvoir hunts. Arena UK not too far either. All have websites.

Leics border is a lot probs a lot more expensive, than somewhere like Mansfield woodhouse, or blidworth. Newark may be worth a look

Also think about areas like Sandiacre, Borrowash, ockbrook, which are between Nottingham and derby or of you want more bang for your buck and to be closer to the family try Ilkeston, Langley Mill, Eastwood area. Don't discount areas with a Derbyshire postcode, you can still be pretty close to Nottingham.

Risley Saddlery is a great independent tack shop on the derby/Nottingham border. RE Farms is on the Nottingham side of Derby, where derby market is.

Blidworth woods is lovely to ride around. Other posters are right in saying you'll probably get more for your money. Also quite often sandy soil in the wood so it may be that livery yards/land available is like that as well and not boggy mud. That said I being near to Beacon Hill and Bradgate is good too. I think anywhere close to a main road (I'm a few miles off M1 J25) you can get to loads of good places with 45mins or so. If you want a large (15 acre) rugged hillside with no facilities and rather run down - but great for horses to be out 24/7 (in Bramcote) then email me hannah@barefootchampions.co.uk but I imagine you'll probably want some sort of facilities.
Good luck with it, lots of nice off road places around here for where ever you end up I'm sure,
Hannah

Thanks again everyone. Lots to look at. Am not against livery, am on livery now, just think having to find space for 3 of them, it may be easier if I can find my own fields to rent. Are there opportunities for that sort of set up around? I know Blidworth a little bit as Mum often works there, have seen a few yards.

Move won't be happening for quite a while yet, but the horses are the bit that I am most worried about, and would like to start getting ideas about sooner rather than later.

Blidworth is lovely and has great access to all sorts of places. I was only in the area for 2 years but absolutely loved it, met loads of people and had a ball. I would go back tomorrow given half a chance. It is a very busy equine area with lots of arenas, xc course etc especially towards Leicestershire but no distance from Blidworth really. The South Notts Hunt are incredibly friendly to people and have lots of fundraising things which is a good way of meeting people. They have a facebook page so might be worth posting on there as the kennels are not far from Blidworth and one of their masters has a livery yard in Blidworth Woods.
Good luck, I'm very jealous!
