Horse in question is my mum's horse Caffrey.

He didn't do any BE last year but the year before he had a really good PN record;

Only thing is, he's quite a chunky chappy, here's him TCing with mum last week

and i'm just a bit worried about the spead/scope factor at novice although he does PN with ease.

Would you have a go or let him stick to being mummies hunter??

thanks Weezy! just realised it's 2004 when we last did some! He's on top form at to mo though so don't think that matters too much. x

TBH (and remember I am NOT an eventing person) the only thing he/you may have trouble with is the technical elements. I do not think there is anything to worry about re: scope, but might be an idea to go school over some techincal Novice combinations to ensure your eye is in.

Yes I know what you mean. he is very clever and responsive with turns etc and can sort himself out amazingly! i've never done any of the tricky combinations that you get in novices on that scale though. He really impressed me in that team chase with mum the other day, she just sat there and he took her round and it was a big course!

He's the kind of horse that rises to the big occasion so if you took him schooling he'd prob be lazy and cr*p! there is such a big jump between PN and N, scary! xx

Yeah, just have a go! If he's quick and clever as well then Novice should be a breeze. I didnt find the step up from PN a huge one. Although depends on which course you go to, they do seem to vary. You could ask around and find out which is the best first-time Novice.
