Novice Showing Advice

Hi,

I am a bit of a showing virgin and have entered into a novice ridden class at a local show (but is a qualifier for the Royal London). My horse is a 15hh PB overheight Connemara and I was wondering what to wear and how to turnout as there is a plethora of differing views on the internet!

I thought perhaps I could wear beige jods, navy jacket with white stock, long boots, spurs and a snaffle or double bridle. As he is a native I have been told to leave him unplaited but as he is overheight I wasn't sure whether this was correct.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

A Part Bred M&M of 15 H should be plaited and trimmed and turned out as a riding horse or hunter , according to its type.
M&M is not for part breds

A tweed jacket with shirt and tie is correct but at a local show you could wear navy, but its shirt and tie, not stock, for daytime wear.

Long boots and spurs are correct, so just pliat up, trim and grab and tie and you'll be fine.
 
i would plait him up if overheight, and wear beige or cream jods, hacking jacket and tie.
 
as he is over height he is not eligable for the M&M purebred classes, however overheight connies tend to make lovely small hunters.

tweed jacket, shirt, tie, cream/canary jods, long boots for you. Pony Plaited up, plain hunter bridle.
 
My overheight connemara (15hh) was shown successfully (up to national level) as a Show Hunter Pony, and then did well as a riding horse under side saddle. It's likely that yours will be of hunter type, but do you have a photo? Is the class title "Novice Riding Horse" or "Novice Ridden Horse" as it it makes a bit of a difference to your options.

I'm going the other side of the fence and don't plait. I think. Plenty of welsh cobs are getting taller and we don't plait and we do M&M successfully - but not sure if connies absolubtely completely must be 14.2 & under?

Tweed is correct but don't worry if you have navy jacket instead for a local.

Check the class rules and if in doubt ring the secretary to check if they allow spurs and double reins in novice showing - I've been caught out before on the bridle, if its a novice horse or equitation type class they tend to only allow snaffles, many others they prefer two reins.

yes the breed standard says connies have to be 14.2hh and under. over height connemara are entered in a seperate stud book and at breed shows are put in with the partbreds.

welsh cobs are getting bigger because there is no height limit on thier breed standard for the section D's
