Pony had wire wound 8 days age, vet came out last Monday gave him a tet booster and said wound was nasty but clean and I had managed it okay. Recomended 4 days box rest, bandaging and then walking out. The wound was on right front leg and he was 4/10th lame. He is now very lame as back legs stocked up and right hind same size from hock to hoof. He was on box rest last year for tendon injury and sticked up but nothing like this. Phoned vets this morning and been advised that he must stay in. Worried sick and have bandaged all four legs. Any advice? Obviously I'm going to call vet again tomorrow.

If he was ok to walk in hand after 4 days could he not be put out in a small paddock so he can move quietly around but not get up any speed, vets seem to want box rest often at the expense of other risks, I would get him out if you can.
Hilton herbs do a good herbal supplement that helps with circulation, I have used it and it does help.

I too would say the Hilton Herbs product is very good.

Where is the cut.

If the wound can be bandaged I would do that and turn him out.

The swellings are due to a fluid build up that would circulate better if he was out moving around.lymphadema is a build up of fluid where the lymph system (drainage system) needs to have movement to works.

Vets are too inclined to say box rest for everything.

Cut is across pastern just above hoof bulb which is why the vets recommended to keep in cos of risk of contamination and movement keeps reopening it. arrghhhhh.....

went up tonight ponys back legs were double + the size they should be other than leg wth wire wound which looks vaguley normal other than large wound. He had Dug up new bed and capped his hock, very depressed and unhappy, left both last nights and this morning's haynet, done one poo over 24 hours, vet came up poss infection, but maybe just age makes it harder for him, has spasmodic collic from pain and stress. hand worked him for 1/2 hour before vet got here and he had picked some grass and eat a hard feed so he had a poo. heart rate 64 when resting (normally 34) , got more antibotics, bute and had some injection of something tonight. got to go to business meeting tomorrow 100 miles from home so will check him 5.30 tomorrow morning and then a good friend who stayed with us and vet this evening will keep an eye on him.wish I was dead really but that wont help him or my family but strangely although feel very upset and near tears cant actually cry most odd.

I found Bioflow magnetic boots helped greatly with my ponys ruptured hind tendon a few years ago, and cider vinegar diluted one part to two of water in a leg wash with witch hazel.though the leg sounds to swollen for boots.Moving around helps circulation and turnout fort a time with his friends would help his frame of mind.I used to feed my pony cleavers (sticky willy) as recommended by a local herbalist.HiltonHerbs are useful as well.Try to keep a clear head stay focused and you will get through this worrying time.

can' use magnetic boots if there is any chance of infection, what about some massage boots, or manual massage up toward his body if you have time ( John Whitaker do some massage boots and if you ring them direct they are £60.) Did the vet give any further advice or medication, assume he is on bute or something to take the swelling down. Is he bandaged, to try and help get the swelling down, would cold hosing help?
I was advised to box rest my horse, but as he is prone to ulcers and is verys stressy if left on own I have turned him out in very small area.
My feeling is stressing and running round the stable is worse than being out!
Good luck

sorry just seen you have more bute and antibiotics.
Can you dress the wound with some very strong plaster to try and stop it opening when he walks? although if its possbily infected are you polticing as I assume you don't want to seal the infection in.

Oops, you are right mjcssjw2.Magnetic boots could drive any infection deeper.Hope the poor boy improves soon with medication and TLC.

Cold hose, bute, antibiotics, dry baby nappy, tea tree cream, duct tape, turn the poor thing out!! Honestly. It will heal... it just needs time. tea tree cream is wonderful stuff - get it in boots or tescos ;) or use honey :) He needs to move to get the swelling o go down... he must be so uncomfortable with legs like tree trunks :(

My boy over-reached and sliced his heal bulb... I did nothing but hose / scrub it out and fill it with tea tree cream twice a day every day for a week and absolutely NOTHING came of it. didn't even cover it.

Tbh id talk to the vet again, the treatment is causing even more problems, id ask if i could bandage up, cover with vetwrap and restrict turnout in as dry an area as i could find and turn out for a few hours, the wound will still heal, but itll possibly be slower

So sorry to hear this such bad luck.Iunderstand how you feel.My horse was pts last Dec.(old age). You did your best and take consolation of the happy times you had together, take time to get over it and try not to beat yourself up over what ifs.
