I noticed my boy has a splint today - hes not lame on it and its not hot. Do I just carry on as normal?

ALSO - I was reading about putting a slice of lemon on it and bandaging for 12 hours. Does this really work?

Any advice would be really appreciated

I would carry on as per normal but try not to work on hard going or trot on the roads. The lemos does sometimes work although Ive no idea why, maybe its the acidity! Youre supposed to cut the lemon in half, put one half of it on the skin and bandage. The other half you keep and when that has gone all mouldy you take the bandage and other half off

. A Dutch groom taught me that one and I think she learned it from Foster, the Irish eventer.

I've just found a web site that says that the reason it works is that it stabalises the splint by supporting it all round!

A lemon also acts as a blister (a milder form of splintex etc), this blisters the area, increasing bloodflow, and hopefully bone resorption.

If the horse is sound, and the splint not too near the knee, you can usually keep going as normal (though I wouldn't do any fast work on firm ground). There's no reason fro treating it unless you've got a show horse or it's aggravating structures around it due to it's size.

Lots and lots of horses have spints that cause them no problems at all, there are quite a few happening due to the hard ground we've had lately.

no no stop working the horse!!!!!
increased work can make the size of the splint larger!!!
my pony formed one 2 years ago and is below the knee, and the whole time it was forming he was sound! but the vet advised us not to work him, and instead put either something like ice tight or kaolin on it (the poltice thing i fink) which will reduce the size and help it form hard...
the more the splint is near the knee the less injury and lameness it will cause. lol

Splintex is excellent - decreased my boys massive old splint hugely. I think you'd use the Silver on a new one.

I tried the lemon thing - didnt work for me!

Otherwise make sure you cold hose it as much as you can and like only_me says, try to keep it cold with a cooling clay or ideally a cool boot etc.

Here's another suggestion, it worked for me. Dab the splint 20 times or there about, with a real cork dipped in pigs oil, once or twice a day. Some times the old remedies are the best, Got to be worth a try - Good luck
