Bl***y tractor driver just came up behind the pony while she was out hacking and walking quietly home He got so close the rider could touch the tractor and held his hand on the horn. When she naturally shot forward he raced her along the road flat out pippin the horn as he went. This was in the thirty mile an hour part of a very busy main road in the village next to the field there were kids in pushchairs, cars another two tractors and people waiting at the bus stop.

I usually dont have any trouble with tractors they are usually very good dont know what this ar**hole though he was playing at he probably thought it funny. Someone could have been seriously hurt or killed by his actions I am so angry.
To add insult to injury when she stopped and stood quietly to let him passed he had a trailer load of pigs on the back.
Thankfully she seems alright her feet are a bit warm hope it doesnt trigger a concussion laminitis because if it does he will be down the vets bills if I have to pursue every tractor owner in lincolnshire to find him

Have you reported it to the police? That is seriously dangerous. Someone could have been killed, as well as the harm caused to the pony.

Pigs behind a tractor sounds like it would be from a fairly local pig farm.

Should be easy to trace him, report it the police and find out Who it was someone in the village will know.

Please ensure, by whatever means available, that this person does not repeat such ridiculous and dangerous behaviour. Thank you.

Police etc aside - what an outrageous thing to do. I've been followed by a tractor down a narrow road, however it was a reasonable distance away but scary enough! Dread to think what could have happened :(

Have reported it the police are coming later today to get a statement I hope thy can a least give him a flea in the ear but I doubt they will get much joy. Still next time the rider will take the number plate but didnt think to today as she still had to get the pony home. Lots of witnesses though who said they would support her in an incident report

Excellent.

Police just been but not much they can do without the number plate but only 4 pig farms in the area so they are going to pop round and see if any were out on the road this morning
Slightly worried that it was the right thing to do as I dont want to start a war and have him causing a serious accident

Well, you're not going to stop him being a **** if you don't report him so it's the right thing to do.

OP - whereabouts in Lincolnshire, and was the driver young or old?

My OH has connections throughout the county via Young Farmers District committee and we may be able to nail the moron by word of mouth!

I cannot believe anyone would be so irresponsible and will happily to anything we can to find, name and shame them.

Hi, we have a few pigs and movements between farms and to the abbatoir legally need to be recorded via the bpex system. Every time we make a movement I have to record it electronically and print off the movement. It records the time, duration of journey and who's transporting. This may be something the Police could look at (would only take a phone call to DEFRA/BPEX) as the system shuld shoe exactly who was moving pigs in your area at the time.

Thats excellent information, I hope they find out who the driver is and read him the riot act.

I'm fuming on your behalf!!! How stupid can someone get?!?! That poor pony and rider! What a scary experience for them both. I hope pony isn't too spooked.

Glad you're getting the police involved, it's very very hard to remember a number plate when you're that shaken.
I was riding out with a group of 6 (adults and quite young kids) when I bus came zooming past and spooked all of the normally bombproof ponies. I looked at the number plate, but because of the shock I forgot almost instantly.
However, because it was a bus, I could tell the company the time and direction it was heading in and apparently the driver was given a good telling off! I've since met plenty of buses from the same company and they have all been perfect :)

Hopefully this idiot will get a swift kick up the bum by the police and mend his ridiculous ways!

How terrible! Don't people know they are putting lives at risk doing this:mad:?

Hijacking the thread slightly, but this got me thinking. If the driver of a vehicle was found to have purposely caused a horse to bolt on a road, and as a result the rider fell and received fatal injuries, could the driver then get tried for manslaughter??

Brilliant!!! Surely that should Narrow it down, if they have followed the law that is!

I do hope they find this moron.

What is so absurd is that some police chief in one county is saying that riders could be reported for impersonating a police officer for wearing the "Polite" tabards. Well lets see if the Police are quite so keen to catch this idiot as they are to persecute horse riders!

I'm shocked how flippantly people will genuinely put someone's life at risk...
What because they don't like horsey people or they think it's funny to scare someone or something... Well is that a reason to endanger their life!!

Moron. I hope the police can do something.

Depends on the precise circumstances, but it can be death by dangerous or death by careless driving :) Failing to take appropriate care with a vulnerable road user (including horse riders) is one of the charging criteria for death by dangerous driving.

Manslaughter can apply to driving cases but isn't that common except where the incident has occurred off a public road, since there has to be an actual unlawful act which led to the death, not just a less than acceptable driving standard.

The CPS is helpful on this charging criteria and division of offences: http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/p_to_r/...guidance_on_prosecuting_cases_of_bad_driving/

As a teenager on an off road path, I once got chased by a motorcyclist... I had taken the very green spooky mare off up into a gateway, she was spinning and bronking, but I reckon I could have kept control until the bike passed.... but then he came up the banking towards us - there was a rather wide track he could have taken - he chose to ride towards myself and the mare! She bolted obviously, and he proceeded to chase us for about a mile! It was obviously a game for him, as he kept revving and chasing then falling back. When I reached the road I jumped off Katie (the mare) turned to face him, and gave a fantastic tirage of cursing! Oh I gave him hell! His comeback? '******ing horses shouldnt even be up here!' What on the bridleways and moors you mean? I must admit it has rather skewed my view on bikers after that knobber! I've only ever met lovely bikers since, who quiet or kill their engines when they see a horse, but that one guy made my blood boil!
