i just had to ride abby on the roads today because of the weather, but we made a nice wee loop going round the town. i was truely shocked at how many inconsiderate drivers there were, usually the people in our town are quite good as there are so many riders.

but today i was on a road which has a portacabin sitting on it due to building work, so there is only enough room for one car, as i was passing the portacabin which abby think will kill her at any moment a car came round didn't slow down and pushed me up onto the side of the road couldn't of cared less. almost knocked abby's back legs off!

then i was on another wee road, which has room for a single car and maybe a smart car lol! and this woman was driving towards me looked as if she was about to slow down but then accelerated towards me very nearly missing abby like cm's off practically took my leg off!!!

sorry for my rant, but it really annoys me!!!

might invest in one of those!!! but its so annoying because abby is a big horse who is still new here so can still be spooky, and even if she's sidestepping and joggin people just zoom past us arse holes!!!!

I know someone who, when a car drove really close to her and her youngster, took her foot out of her stirrup and kicked the wing mirror off.
Not that I'm recommending criminal damage, of course!!

I know, one women at our yard has a tabard that says expect the unexpected! That seems to work!

What a brilliant idea!

*searches for black marker pen*

Drivers are so inconsiderate - there are too many cars on the roads in this country

People drive too fast and don't care about anyone else but themselves - it really annoys me

I'm sure they are very sorry when they hit people, but that doesn't make up for it, does it? People have no vision of consequences

drivers just dont seem to relise that it'll definatly hurt if they get a horse through there windscreen! if there is a passing place i have started to pull in an wait for cars to pass because it has become so friggin dangerous!

I know exactly what you mean. Drivers around here (the New Forest) are SO inconsiderate! Despite the wild ponies, donkies and cattle, they still don't slow down, even though you'd think they're well used to it.

On the other hand though, it makes me REALLY angry when I'm driving and slow right down past riders and they don't say thank you. When this happens, I wind the window down and have a quick word - it's bloody rude and gives the rest of us a bad name. I know sometimes people are on young/spooky horses but honestly, you don't even have to lift your hand, a simple smile and a nod would do.

They soon slow down, after they have sh*t themselves. If they say anything, just say well if you got any closer it would have been my horse through your windscreen, which would you prefer.

This was how i had my accident!! the mare i was riding tried to spin and gallop off as the car coming towards us was travelling to fast and then accelerated and as she spun, they overtook and hit her.

They lost their wing mirror and she was lucky to just have a small cut and a bruise. needless to say i went mental and as soon as they drove off, just burst into tears. luckily, we were close enough tho the yard for me to dismount and lead her back (she was a bit jumpy and better when i was on the ground with her).

There was a very nice man who stopped and offered to go back and hitch his trailer up and give us a lift back!!! So there are SOME nice drivers out there!

I nearly had my rant the other day.
I always put my hand up and say thank you or nod to acknowledge when people have slowed down for me.I was a bit deep in thought on this occassion because my boy was going for surgery ,any way on the left is a field with about 6 horses in it who normally bomb straight at you ,on the right was the yard area were they can be schooling.Im watching out for possible spooks and Ive got cars coming in both directions.I didnt think it was a good idea to take my hands off the reins to acknowledge every driver . This woman stops her car gets out and screams at me for not thanking her when she slowed down.Even the other car drivers saw the funny side.Perhaps we should also invest in tabbards giving a essay on why it is not always feasible to thank every individual driver.Or we could take flyers with us !!!!!!!and hand them out to the inconsiderate ones.

The hacking in our area used to be great, hardly saw any cars - but in the last 5 years it's got crazy. At the moment I do most of my hacking in Cardrona but the back road has become a real hazard recently with a car coming straight through the middle of a group of 4 of us when we had a young horse having a hissy fit at silage bales! I don't go out without full hi viz get up! Up until last year I was boxing up to Peebles quite a lot and riding round the Sware or Cademuir as it was quieter! I'm moving yards in May and the new place is almost all off road hacking which I'm looking forward to!

I think people feel insulated in their metal boxes and don't care about the outside world, horses and riders included as they are driving along listening to their music etc. I always treat riders how I would like to be treated myself e.g. I pass wide and slow. I do like to get a thank you or nod of the head but if someone is on a young horse or having a difficult moment I completely understand that thanking me is not their foremost priority.

I think where I ride, a lot of people have moved out there from town and still think they can drive the same way on rural roads.
And as a female, I think women drivers are the worst. Even the lads in their (dad's!) souped-up cars slow down and some even stop, to kill the loud exhaust noise.
One young "lady" gave me a one-fingered salute when I signalled with an arm for her to slow down, because I had two youngsters with me.
Was so shocked at the time I didn't respond, plus she had already zoomed past me.
A woman with a baby seat in the back flew past a friend on a 3yo with about an inch to spare.
Oh, but then there was the chap that followed us, pulled in and then, er, pulled something else while we rode past. I didn't even notice until someone else pointed him out, else I would have got his reg.....and threw a rock at his motor.

If you are riding out on the road then always wear Hi-Viz just to make sure there is no way that road users are not aware that you are there.

Also why not take the BHS Road Safety course and exam because it will give you a number of usefull tips to enable you to attempt to control the traffic around you.

There is a local BHS group in each County of Great Britain and each of them do run Road Safety courses.

i was wearing all my reflective stuff, but i think the reflector with expect the unexpected is a great idea!! they just really don't care.

I sympathise entirely and really hate inconsiderate rude drivers, and the potential tradgedies they could cause both to horses, riders and of course themselves.

But I have another pet hate.

I always slow down and give a horse or horses on the road a wide berth.
Most riders respond with a raised hand or a nod.
A small thing, but very important. It makes the driver feel that their considerate actions are appreciated.
I know I have always appreciated cnsiderate drivers and always acknowledged them.

There is however a small minority of riders who fail to acknowledge when drivers are condsiderate, this makes me mad.
mad.gif

Next time the driver may not bother and the result could be an accident.
Sometimes I have seen rides two abreast when cars are waiting to go around them!!!

I don't think that there is ever an excuse for a driver not to slow down and give a horse space, but ALL riders should be encouraging such consideration by acknowledging any considerate actions by drivers.

Sorry to put a rant in your rant.

I would just like to point out if I may (as both a rider and the driver of a coupe sports car) as a driver you don't always see people thank you. I drove past a friend of mine and i know she thanked me, yet I didn't see it as I was so low down. Don't always assume people don't say thank you, you may not have seen it.

Then again there are some rude little sods out there and I have stopped the car and told people that by not thanking drivers they aren't helping the general dismal view of riders of the road. (This is from being behind a car that was overtaking nicely and not a word of thanks from the rider!).

totally agree with u, if i'm in the car and there is clearly no thanks you or appreciation for slowing down and passin wide it really gets up my nose. i always wave nod and smile, and i think thats another reason why it angers me so much when people attempt to kill me lol! cause i'm always so nice to the drivers

I don't even care if I don't get a wave, I understand that sometimes, you need to keep both hands firmly on the reins. But a nod and a smile and a mouthed "thanks" are not too hard for any rider, and its just rude not to.

we have to walk up a country lane to get to our field and the speed some of the cars go down there is unbelievable.. i continue to walk up the middle up the road until i hear them slow down and then i will move to the side and thank them. the worst offenders are the nursery school mothers (nursery is right next to yard ) to the point that i put a notice up in the nursery.
