Josie has been on restricted 20x20 turnout for a few weeks now, and on Wed she'd had enough and jumped out of her paddock taking all her electric fencing with her.

She has a small cut to the inside of her left hind (her good leg) about level with hock, but thats about it.

Vet came down to check her bad leg, all fine, had a look at the cut, said dont worry too much.

We (vet and I) decided to keep her in for 2 weeks while I ride as much as I can to strengthen that other leg, then turn out with the main herd.

Rode yesterday, she did reallly well.

Went down this morning and her good leg the one with the cut is fat.

It's swollen on the inside, and theres a bit of heat.

I rode her out, completely sound, and it went down a bit, cold hosed but it didn't make too much difference.

I called my long suffering vet, who knows how famous she is for fat leg syndrome, but it doesn't stop me worrying.

He said he could come down, but it was up to me. He didn't think it sounds necessary?

What would you all do?

I'm so paranoid about legs after her suspensory op on the other hind. Think my judgement is a bit jaded.

Is there anything I can do apart from walking, stable bandages and cold hosing?

Do you think is because of the cut? 3 days later? Or somehitng more sinister that I'm missing? As I said, me and legs dont go at the moment!

Thankies x

I would imagine it is nothing too sinister and is just localised swelling due to the cut and possible bruising, and that being in is causing the swelling.
The only other option I'd have thought is turnout but I understand that is a problem atm...

Yup. I agree. That and standing in has probably made it swell.

As I said to you the other day, containing my mare was clearly proving more detrimental than beneficial. I brought her home the other night, dosed her up with a hefty dose of sedalin and turned her out in a paddock next to my other mare. She has been far quieter and good as gold.

Thats really good to know puppy. Glad your girlie behaved herself. Just hyope mine does.

I've been looking at the cool pack type things I can bandage to her leg. Wonder if that would work?

If it's still swollen I might turn her out sooner than expected.

can you gently lunge her to give some circulation if she cant go out. ALso i would poultice her leg too in case there is anything in it and cold hose it. If concerned then ring vet.

I dont think I'd trust her to lunge her. I'll take her for a long walk round the paddock.

Fab idea about poulicing though. At least I'd know nothing in there x
