Numbers/Views on neglected animals

Hi Guys,

With the big discussions of the Amersham horses at the moment, and peoples comments on visits to horse sales with animals in just as bad/worse conditions, id like to ask:

How often do people witness these neglected animals?

Is there some kind of monitoring of the animals passing through these sales?

Personally, im quite "screw evil humans, save the animals" so its not unheard of for me to jump to conclusions!

So what is the honest low down on the amount of "killer buyers"/neglected animals in Britain? Also, how does everyone feel about the action taken against the owners of the neglected?

Sorry its a bit deep and grotty for lunch time, but id love to know how people feel!

nope - here's one.....

I went to a sale last year looking for a companion pony. I didn;t find one, but there was a horse there, about 16.3hh, black TB type gelding - had a really sweet face. He was tacked up 'ready to go' but looked like a bag of bones

It made me so upset - I would have bought him but I didn't have enough money - he went for about £1200. He just looked as though he had put his heart and soul into working (probably hunting) and had been cast aside because he coudln't handle it any more

I've not been back since - I can't stand going if I can't rescue anything

what did the owners say? Do you think there was a reasonable excuse (if you can say that) i.e like a poor doer..etc

Im too scared to go as i will try and take them all... but is buying them from poor dealers any good? As it funds their next poor soul..? Its a big horrible circle..
 
I went to watton horse sales this year and I must admit I have seen some real skinny horses there in th epast and have bought them, however this time I saw none. I did however see a trotter that was lame being raced up and down.
Cruelty comes in many forms though, the definition of cruelty being unneccessary suffering.
How many of our horses are suffering without the owner knowing? If you think of the amount of people who would let there horses graze on ragwort, not have their horses teeth done, not have a saddle checked, would rather put on a martingale on a horse tossing its head around then find the root of the problem (I'm not saying all owners with horses wearing martingales!!) Head tossing can be a sign of pain, or would ride an unsound horse I'm sure you'd find a lot of cruelty goes on, think about how many horses get a good jab in the gob when ridden, or are denied the right to be a horse.
As for the law, if an owner is found guilty and apologizes then they may get their animals back that have been starved to within an inch of their lives, and animals have to be on deaths door to be taken away. Some vets in order to keep their clients won't stand up in a case of animal cruelty and say that an animal is suffering, they should be struck off!
 
there wouldn't half as many so called dodgy dealers if Joe Public didnt supply them with knackered/old/lame/unridable animals that they didnt have the bollox to take a responsible route with ie take them to an abattoir or have the PTS at home.

far too often the old argument raises its ugly head...Dodgy Dealer..Dodgy Sales..blah, blah, blah....

and there wouldn't be half as many "ahh-factors" at a sale if Joe Public took off their rose-coloured specs and didn't buy something that is obviously better off at an abattoir.

stop the supply, no demand...

The horse I saw looked as though it had been worked into the ground - it didn't need an abbatoir, it needed a damn good feed IMO. I agree, some of them end up there because the owner doesn't have the balls to PTS, but not all of the 'dodgy horses' are like that.

I agree with you Rosie - there are loads of people out there who are not responsible owners. I was only saying to my back lady the other day 'what do people who 'dont believe in back people' do when their horse has back pain? Hit it?' Sadly, I think that is what happens in a lot of cases
