Hi, I am going to unaff dressage soon and have been told to wear a white saddle cloth square by one person and a black fitted numnah by another! Which would look smarter on a grey?:)

I'm with S and S - nothing to say you must have a white saddle cloth or a black numnah. Either is fine. I have a skewbald and usually go with black saddlecloth as white looks ridiculous on him. I don't "do" white gloves either, why draw attention to your hands when black, navy or beige gloves blend in with your jacket ?

It is said that black can be better for a gray, as white can show that a horse is not truly white!! But both are fine. If you go for non-white gloves be ready for a steward to say you are not allowed them. The rule is white is strongly recommended.

The white glove rule changed some time ago, it now states simply "gloves must be worn"

As for what you put under the saddle as long as it is a discrete colour it really does not matter.

As above, the white thing is just fashion. and as above, you don't need white gloves - just a solid conservative colour. I used to wear black gloves to hide wobbly hands (works well!) but now wear beige gloves. I also wear beige breeches (with a cream stock) as I'm not a perfect size 8 (far from it!) and my horse wears a black saddle cloth. We do BD and have never been questioned, as we do comply with the rules, but we look different to most other competitors. However we look smart and I like our turn out. I prefer to look slightly different and not follow fashion.

I've been told on numerous occasions by people who have years of experience but haven't read the BD rules, that I MUST use a white saddle cloth for dressage. I have a mainly white coloured mare so use a black numnah with my black tack, and it looks much better on her. When I tell them that you can now use any plain conservative colour I get lots of harrumphing and comments about standards nowadays. But I still use a black numnah.

no, its not a problem, but can I compete in a treeless? This is the one I have http://http://www.easytreksaddles.co.uk/ourshop/prod_2138225-2015-EASYTREK-COMFORT-treeless-saddle-165-seat-BLACK.html Oh and also, would a gel pad be better?

treeless saddles often needs their own specialist saddle pads designed to be used with them. I can't see the link but as for whether you can compete in it - I think for dressage the saddle has to look like a traditional english saddle, not totally sure though.

I have a very dark bay Welsh D who is very short coupled - a white saddlecloth i think draws attention to his shortness so instead i chose a navy blue saddlecloth which looks lovely and matches my jacket! Also i normally wear white gloves and jods but since changing to brown boots i will be going for beige boots and perhaps navy or beige gloves too and a beige stock
