When I put the saddle on I always make sure the numnah is pulled up into the gullett so it is not pressing on his spine but as soon as I get on the saddle the numnah is lieing flat across his back, E.g. not pulled up anymore.

Is it the numnah I am using and need to get a more expensive/ differently shaped one or is this normal. It isn't rubbing or anything but I don't want to think I am causing presure along his spine.

His saddle fits great so I just use a fairly thin numnah. I like to use one as I think it must be comfier than having bare leather against his back and also help to protect the saddle from getting to much sweat on it.

When I look at other horses theres always seem to stay in place so am worrying now, what am I doing wrong?

I had a similar problem which was solved when I used a high wither numnah.

You are doing the right thing by trying to keep the numnah off the spine.

yeah try a high wither one. it might be that the straps on the numnah that attach it to the saddle are pulling it down. also i seemed to get on better with saddle cloths rather than numnahs

I use a high wither numnah on my non high withered pony as was finding that a normal one was lying flat on her withers and was worried the same as you that it might rub or put pressure on the withers.

At least when you push it up into the gullet, it stays there.

I'm going to disagree. My cheapy shires numnahs used to slip down with my old saddle which didn't fit but stay nice and high with my current saddle which does. I'd certainly consider the possibility that you saddle might need adjusting
