I wouldnt think so , i thought they only lost their "waterproofness" through being worn and just general wear and tear. Prepared to be proven wrong though
I thought that. The rug is a weatherbeeta turnout that I bought 2 years ago. I wasnt a cheep rug, but it was in the sale, so I bought it even though I didn't need it! I have stored it in the bag it came in, in my house. I decided to use it on my horse yesterday. It rained, and my horse came in soaking wet, it was completly soaked all the way through, not just a bit wet!!!!!!!! It is definatly a turnout!!!!!!!!! So it is therefore a completly pointless rug, I don't need a another stable rug, I need a turnout rug. I don't think I have the receipt anymore, and as I bought I 2 years ago I doubt the shop would take it back anyway. So i think i'm going to have to take it and get it reproofed, as see if that works. I knew there was a reason I stuck to my Horsewares!!!!!!!!!!!!
No not at all. I do that all the time, buy rugs in sales even when I don't need them and end up using them 2 or 3 years down the line. As someone else said as long as they have been stored somewhere reasonable they'll be fine.
And washing them in detergent ruins their waterproofness as well, and even if you go for reproofing I find they're never as good as when first new/unused.
