If hay is soaked for 12 hours has it had all the fattening elements soaked out of it so you can feed good doers / chunky monkeys as much as you/they want (ad-lib), or do you still have to restrict the quanity fed?
If it is just for bulk to fill them up and they have no grazing I would give ad lib but if they are laminitic or are trying to shift wieght you should restrict the amount.
Thanks SU, he is out for 6 hours a day on stripped grazing, then ridden etc and on soaked hay. Would like to put him out at night but others have to be in so i wouldn't like him to be out on his own.
after 12 hours soaking it is known as starvation hay. it has little nutritional value and hense why it is fed to laminitis, as the worst thing you cna do is stare them, as this sends there body into store mode.
My 15h cob is on restricted grazing and has 12lbs of soaked hay in a 24 hour period to supplement it - she also gets 2 feeds of 1kg of Happy Hoof. It maintains her weight for her.
That would be 12 lbs before the hay is soaked, I think
That's about what mine has when he's in the fatty paddock - out at night with 6lbs soaked hay, and in during the day with the other 6 lbs. He's a 15.2 native.
He also has a couple of handfuls of Good Doer for his meds at night.
Mine is 16hh has half a scoop of Happyhoof with supps for breakfast and goes out at 7.30ish comes back in at 1.30ish and has 3lb of soaked hay to take him through to tea time 6pm when he has half a scoop of Happyhoof again with supps (split supps up cos it seems too much to give all in one little feed!). He then goes out for an hour before coming in again and then he has 6lb of soaked hay to take him through to morning.
Does that sound ok
, he is a chunky monkey
Edited to say weight of hay is before it's soaked.
silkey.. I never siad no nutritional value, I said little. The fact shes getting some grass, some happy hoof and the soaked hay and maintaining weight says you have it bob on. What I said is that after 12 hours it can be fed pretty much adlib with no weight gain..
