Why do you have to wear skull caps? I know its the rule, but i dont really understand the reasoning behind it?

Thanks :D

I think it's to do with the fixed peak? Skull caps obviously don't have a fixed peak, so will potentially do a lot less damage in a fall XC than other hats...:)

Yeah i know the fixed peak, but i dont understand how theyre allowed SJ and not XC? you can fall in both? or in any riding for that matter x

I think this is right? something to do with if the peak hit the ground first, then it wouldn't bend/ give way (like a hat silk peak would) and would, in effect, potentially force your head somewhere/in a direction that it shouldn't go and therefore be more dangerous?

Sorry - just read what you replied (my pc wasn't as quick as I hoped!), then no, I have no idea why it makes a difference as obviously you can fall doing whatever, but I assume at XC you're potentially going faster?

Because years ago it was discovered that if you had a fixed peak this could push upwards causing the back of the hat to go into your neck and possible cause a spinal injury.

This was why flexible peaks were introduced. I believe at low level XC you can wear flexible peaks but I assume it's the same principle - possible movement of hat.

I always thought it was because the fixed peak hats have caused a number of broken nose type injuries during falls on xc and they introduced the scull cap to help relieve the problem. These generally happened more during the faster work and the tyope of fall more common from a fixed obstacle
