As the title says! A friend intends giving Nupafeed to her spooky cob; he's been a little $hit lately and had her off several times by spooking and spinning around, but she's quite new to horse-owning and I'm just concerned that she's about to throw her money away by giving him a calmer! Anyone used it and with what results?

Basically Nupafeed is Magnesium. It's a purer form than the powders that other people use. Nupafeed's policy is that it's a different type of Magnesium as it's cheleted (sp) form which means it's sticks into the system better whereas the powders kind of flush through in the wee, so it has a minor relief - than gone, whereas nupafeed keeps them topped up (when given at the recommended dose) at all times, keeping the horse more settled because of this (again as opossed to the other brands out there)

It is expensive, you have to give a good loading dose first. However alot of people swear by it but it will only work if the said pony is actually LACKING in magnesium in the first place. It he isn't nothing will happen, if the horses grazing is lacking in magnesium they can have a more nervous disposition, hence why it works if they do.

As it is pricey I would first have a quick look at his routine and management. What is he being fed?? Maybe cut EVERTHING OUT first..How much he is being worked? WORK HIM MORE ...He the rider competent? GET SOME LESSONS... How long is he being turned out for .. GET HIM OUT AS MUCH AS POSS, MAYBE 24/7.. All of these things can have a big affect so test them out first before she spends her cash. However, many grazing types do lack magnesium and spring grass I think is known to be higher calium and lacking in magnesium.

Yes Nupa feed is expensive, but I know of a few people who have had good results with it.

Personally, I found Naf Magic worked on my tense and stressy mare. I followed the ideas in the post above and she began to settle, so I could discontinue the Naf Magic. However, in Competition conditions, I found Supreme Defuse wonderful, because it kept her calm and chilled - but only needed to be given on the the day, no loading dose needed.

It worked very well on our giant Irish TB when he was out of work. We tried other things which didn't touch him. This one worked within 48 hours. It is pricey though.

I fed it to a very highly strung TB I had on loan about 3 years ago, and TBH I didn't see any difference. I used it for 6 months, but then stopped, and decided the best management was daily work and sensible feeding.

I know that some horses seem to benefit, especially if they do have the magnesium deficiency, so if I were you I'd give it a go and see if it helps.
