My horse was attacked in the paddock this week, sustaining a hefty kick in the face resulting in a broken upper jaw just below his eye and multiple fractures in his upper mandible (cheek). I just wondered if anyone had experience of this and what the prognosis is. The vet is hopeful he will heal naturally but its going to be a long job. The poor boy can only suck up slop and is seriously missing his haynet! I am thinking positive and hope we can ride again in a few months. Its going to be a long boring winter for us both.

I remember a pony years ago with what was a suspected broken jaw after getting head stuck in metal fence. Pony was sent to a yard where he was fed five times a day with high quality sloppy food for weeks, gradually introducing drier food. Eventually after losing quite a bit of weight he started chewing again and made a full recovery. Good luck.
