how much diference can there be in different types of hay. some people have told me hardly any whilst others say some can be heating and similar to high protein haylage. any thoughts
Hay is graded, the same as any other feedstuff. So you will be able to pick up low grade hay all the way up to superior grade hay. They are very very different. To know exactly what grading your hay has, it needs to have a Crop Analysis run on it.
Over here, substandard hay is known as "cattle hay". It is similar to a lot of hay I saw friends using in England. All sun-bleached yellow, crispy, too dry and with barely any nutritional value.
There are so many variables its best to have a proper analysis done.
Weather conditions, growing rates, seed age, grass variety, stalk length, drying time and storing will all influence hay.
The UK does not have good hay growing climate and much of the hay we make here really isnt very good. Now if we could get US/Canada imported barn dried hay at a sensible price I might even be tempted to feed it dry!!
