Nutty mare!

My usual safe sane and exceptional safe mare became a raving nutter today!!!
Took her in the menage down the road to school her, soon as i got on her she was like a rocket ready to explode, jogging etc..shes normally sooooooo laid back! got her in the menage and she through the biggest buck/bronc ever! i dismounted and though i would lunge her to get the fizz out - well she bombed round, bucking etc then stopped and did a HUGE rear!!

she settled after a while and my friend came to join me on her horse to see if we could settle her, all was going well and she started to relax, untill for no reason she through another huge buck - well more like a head down all 4 feet off the ground and a massive buck! i fell on her neck and somehow managed to stay on!! decided enough was enough and led her back to her stable - and discovered she had lost a shoe since i had tacked up

in the stable she was mad sweaty and calling to her friends, after chasing her round the stable with her rug i manged to get it on her, whip her headcollar on and lead her out (well she darted out and i followed!) all the way to her field she was full of herself! turned her out and she had a good buck with her friends then settled with some hay.
So, what turns a nanny horse who anyone can ride, so laid back goes first or last, on her own or in company, like a rock through traffic, never ever takes the mick into this complete loon.
ALFA-A!!!

she has been having it almost ad-lib through the night to gain weight - been on it for 3 days and today was first time ridden since shes been munching her way through it.
The alfa a surprisingly has now vacated the feed room!!

Hoping to have my lovely mare back on Monday after her shoe has been done

Oh dear - just been reading through some posts about alfa-a and seems its not suitable as a hay replacer afterall!

no wonder she was darn mad!!

That wil be the last time i listen to anybody with feeding advice!! lol
Lesson learnt! back to the drawing board!

Poor you its horrible when they change personality suddenly! Mine didn't do well at all on Mollichaff - think it was the mollasses so I feed Winergy Low Energy feed now which seems to suit better. Am sure she will go back to normal soon now she's off it.

I had a similar thing with Alfa Oil it was recommended by YO to put weight on and sent horse totally nuts in hindsight! Wish someone had told me at the time we had vet out and alsorts!

At first i thought she may have been in season but its definitly down to the alfa-a! previously she was on outshine and that sent her through the roof too!

I never thought it would be heating with it being what it is, but then i suppose its full of sugar, it should come with a warning label! funny, some horses get heated with barley (last horse did) yet she has 2 scoops per day of the barley rings and has been having them for months now, would think they would heat her too as she seems to be sensitive to any thing like that

Going to get her a mare supplement too as shes very tempremental when she has a season too, although not quite to todays extent!

You cannot feed alfalfa as a hay replacement (i.e adlib)!!!!!!!

It's a legume, not a grass and is far too high in protein to be a hay replacer- it's know (in the US where it's fed as a partial hay replacer) to cause kidney problems.

By the sound of the qunatities your feeding I'm not suprised it caused her head to explode!

Try speedibeet instead to gain weight.
