For the last few weeks I have noticed some very minor heat in one of my horse's forelegs, just above the fetlock. It comes for a day or so, then goes completely cold and hard for a few days, then returns. It is hardly detectable, but you know your horse, don't you. He has shown no signs of lameness, and has remained in light work throughout.

Two weeks ago, I had the vet booked in for a visit, but the day before it went cold and hard again. Vet said no need to visit in that case, but to monitor it, and if it returns, call him again. It returned the day before yesterday, so was all ready to call him the next day, but when I checked his legs in the morning, it was gone again - aaaagh!

There is a very, very tiny patch of scabby stuff (size of a 10p piece) just below the fetlock which could be a touch of mud fever which I am treating with cream.

The other thing I have noticed is that the hair is slightly rubbed on the area where I sometimes feel heat, so wondered if it was a boot rub. He was wearing boots for turnout (he is a loon in the field) which I have now taken off, but he still wears them for ridden work. I guess I should think about leaving them off altogether to see if the problem resolves itself.

I can't think of any other patterns which might help you come up with some suggestions...trying to work out if it appears on days when he's worked, then goes on days off, but haven't noticed that pattern. And it makes no difference if he's been in the stable or out in the field.

Obviously, I am a little concerned that it is a tendon injury grumbling away.

Any advice?
