I've noticed that my new horse (ex racehorse) sometimes has quite a lot of white snot in both nostrils when we get back to the yard from either exercising or schooling. Its not every time. Asked my instructor and he said as long as its not every time its fine. However, the horse is mostly living out at the moment so hardly ever comes into contact with dust.

I've had horses with white snot before and can't actually remember what we did about it!! Its def. not yellow or green and doesn't smell at all.

Should I ring the vet and get him to have a look and see whether he's got a low grade virus of some description or just see how we go? Is it worth putting him on some kind of suppliment and seeing whether it clears up?

Hi

Does your horse cough at all?

As he is out, I would expect that as his head is down low eating grass, the mucus which would usually go down the back of his throat is going down his nose instead and the process is sped up as he exercises.

As long as it is white/clear and not smelly, he should be OK.

When my horse gets a bit snotty/chesty, I give him a course of respireaze.

As he is a new horse to you, it might be worth having the vet look at him if it doesnt clear up.

When I come back from a ride my horse occasionally has some white snot running out his nose, he doesn't cough and looks fantastic. When the vet came to give him his vaccination his listened to his chest and said it all sounded fine and that it wasn't anything to worry about.
