Wanting to know how horses that have been treated for OCD that had arthroscopy have recovered.
Interested in any joint but particularly interested for stifle recovery. Did they return to full work load? Any further problems? Eg arthritis. What age? Discipline?
Unfortunately just had my horse diagnosed and treated (arthroscopy) for ocd in both stifles that wasn't noticeable on x rays. Wanting a realistic idea to how horses progress following treatment I find it hard to see how they won't develop arthritis in the joint as the age after cartilage removal from arthroscopy.
(Had an arthroscopy on my own knee few years ago and left it very weak!)
Any ideas thoughts and stories please share :)

Ah, very pertinent.

OCD horse had double stifle arthroscopy two years ago, age 6. Initially very successful, returned to full work including fun rides, a bit of hunting and some low level dressage. Two years on and things seem to have completely broken down, not only in the stifles but - I think, not confirmed by vet but I suspect - also affecting sacroiliac and hocks to the extent that he cannot be ridden. We're at field ornament or pts.

I think one thing I've learned is that the whole hind limb apparatus in a horse is very complex and due to the nature of horses, the things that we expect of them, and the fact that they spend so much time on their feet, the outcome in one area can have a massive impact on other areas, and solving one problem often leads to other problems.

Thanks for your reply such a hard one. Surgeon said mine wasn't the worst but not the best he'd seen although it wasn't visible on x rays. Just wish I had a crystal ball!

I think all I can say is that I would still have gone ahead even though it's only resulted in a couple of years of useful work for mine. He was insured and I'm glad that I did everything I could for him.
