I thought ocd was obsessive compulsive disorder but clearly not!
Harley has it in both hocks, plus djd in one. He is booked in for surgery at Liphook. Anyone had any experience of this? How sound horse was after etc
Thanks
Annemarie

OCD
osteochondrosis desicans. Its a developmental condition usually seen in youngsters where cartilage bits float in the joint and get in the way of joint function. Surgery has good results. The floating pieces are removed.

My horse has DJD in both hocks and is a bit stiff, but ok following injections. His joints are starting to fuse which is why he is stiff. He is ridable and comfortable.

The Liphook has a good reputation and I am sure you horse will be fine. Try not to worry, easier said than done, I know.

well apparently they can clean up the djd as well
thanks for that

My horse had an arthroscopy for an injury that caused OCD-like cartilage chips in his hock. I'm glad to say the surgery was uneventful, horse came through with no problems at all. He was never lame on the joint, so soundness wasn't really an issue, however without the surgery he would have developed DJD in later life.

The aftercare involved around five days in the hospital, then after he came home he had to have the dressings changed by the vet every two days for a fortnight. After the dressings came off he was hand walked for around three weeks and then turned out in a small paddock. Six weeks after surgery he had a steroid/HA injection into the joint capsule to reduce the residual swelling. After that he was turned out and came back into work.

Worth saying that his hock looks odd - there is effusion around the joint capsule that he will have for life. He also has a bit of white hairs from being bandaged for so long. However he is totally sound on it and has a complete range of movement. Is on every oral joint supplement you can think of though LOL.

Good luck
