Can anyone tell me their experiences of this, operations, or steroids, and the outcome? Was your horse able to work 'normally' after an op? Approx how mich did the op cost?

ALL info gratefully recived.

Thanks.

I have an 11yr old Welsh Cob who was diagnosed with OCD in both stifles aged 8. He had bilateral arthroscopy which cost about 3k from memory. He had a couple of months of box rest followed by a long period of field rest and then a fair bit of ridden walking. As soon as I started trotting him again it was clear he wasn't quite sound. Vet recommended still continueing to bring back into work and he went back to competing Novice/Elem dressage but remained unsound on a hard surface so took the decision to retire him to hacking. He did however go hunting a couple of times last winter and jumped a few things and that doesn't seem to have affected him adversely so he's now doing some fun rides and will probably hunt again this winter. He remains sound in an arena but never really enjoyed dressage so I think for him it's best he just sticks to hacking/hunting.

Our 8 month old foal was operated on for OCD in stifle. She's 3 now and looks sound but she hasn't been brought in to work yet. Our op was just over 2k for one stifle. The vets advised as much time as possible so she won't be broken until she's 4. Another girl I know had her 4 year old operated on and she was told to give him a year off

A friend of mine had her rising 3 year old operated on both stifles for ocd, I think it cost about £3k. The horse is now backed and in work with a proffessional eventer, shes now a 6 year old.

8yo diagnosed, bilateral. Steroid did nothing, arthroscopy in RH (~£2.3K at a uni hospital). couldnt do anything surgically so had Irap and about 18 months off. Came pretty sound but never dared put him in hard work or jumped after that (although he still jumped out of the paddock regularly). Often bunny hopped in canter-trot transitions. On a bad day 1/10 lame behind in trot. went to light hacking and schooling.PTS at 11 for melanomas.
