Hi there everyone.

I wondered if I could have a bit of advice. My colt (holstein x irish) has always had large stifles since he was a week or so old. Never lame, very powerful. He has passed a vetting about 4 weeks ago. But I am paranoid! It does not feel swollen. But almost like muscle? My vet thinks it probably isn't ocd due to him being like it since a very young foal, and him not ever being lame.

This horse means the world to me so I am extremely paranoid!

Here is a picture of him as a 3 week old.

And this is him now

Thanks in advance :)

Can a horse 'cap' a stifle?? I have no idea but that's almost what it looks like, would be odd to do both I suppose. I will watch this thread with interest.

Just can't figure it out. He has been seen by a few vets now who have never said anything. May just xray for peace of mind. It feels like muscle rather than swelling.

I am amazed the vet did not recommend xrays and scans when he was vetted, usually if there is a possibility of an issue they will recommend further tests before passing, that is not "normal" and needs checking even if it is just to prove it is normal for this young horse.

For peace of mind, if you're insured then have him looked at. When you've only one youngster it's hard coz you see every new little thing and all the irregular things that happen when they grow! (I know, I'm the same)!

However, I have a lot to do with people who breed on a big scale & when you look round their youngsters you see all sorts of odd bumps, lumps & swellings etc. Unless they're obviously wrong/lame, then they're ignored until they're 3 coming 4yrs old, by which time 99.9% of them are sound! healthy horses (& stay that way!)!!
