Hi,

My horse has been to the vet today, and has been confirmed with ocd in his hock.

Has anybody on the forum ever had a horse with this ? and if so what treatment plan was given to your horse.

Any advise would be much appriciated.

Thanks x

my friends youngster was diagnosed with this in his hock

- she was devastated as she paid huge sums for him as a foal, and she had just started backing him so had to call that off till he was sorted.

I think he underwent an operation to sort it and is now 100%

. He was also given the newmarket joint supplement. He has regular check ups to make sure nothing else is going on with the hock but my friend is really pleased with his progress & should be looking at backing him this spring.

Yep a 3 year old at our yard had it.Operated on successfully but owner branded the horse loss of use and sold it on. I have heard the horse is still doing very well on supplements.
The horse is now 13.

we had a 17.3 3yr old ISH stallion on our yard which developed OCD in his hocks. He went to Cambridge vet school and had key hole surgery to debride the fragments and lavage the joint. He had a year R&R and then returned to full work.

I think a lot of the success depends on how early you catch it. OCD left for a while can cause secondary osteoarthritis (OA) which in the hocks is spavin. When you have this level of cartilage degeneration by treating you are simply doing damage limitation as the destruction has already begun.

What has your vet advised?

Hi...thanks everybody for all the kind replys.

The specialist looked at the xray and has told me to bring the horse back into work, walk, trot and canter, as when he is trotted up and put on the lunge they are saying he is only slightly lame, but as iv said its only when the horse is put into an outline and asked to work correctly you can see major lameness, but they are saying the horse needs to be lame.

So now they want to see me riding him at the yard (vet) then the vet is to tell the specialist whats happening...then i have to go back to the clinic ride the horse again for the specialist so he can see what is happening.

They then said they would x ray the other hock inject some sort of anathestic into the hock and take it from their.

My horse has been lame for nearly 2mts so hopefully will be sorted out soon ...fingers crossed.
