Daisy normally loves her grass and will storm off into the field. Yesterday she planted several times going up to the field which we assumed was a protest at being turned out in her grazing muzzle. Today she was apparently very reluctant to go out again, walking very slowly making a whickering noise all the way up and just standing at the gate when she was let go rather than going to eat grass.

She was eating when I got her in tonight and rode really nicely.

It just seems odd that she doesn't want to go out and isn't really eating when she is first turned out. Her field is lovely and she isn't being bullied. If anything she bullies her field companion.

Any ideas? Am I just being an overprotective mother?

Hmm... Did she seem footsore at all? Our pony's a bit like that at the moment because we have to take him down a shale path to his field, and the bloomin' farrier can't come out till friday, and it obviously hurts his poor little hooves...

Maybe she's in season? Mares are odd, I don't pretend to understand them xD Perhaps she's just looking for some hansome young geldings (stallions?

) to impress...

I'd reccomend a vet, though... Have a feel of her back and legs. Unusual behaviour usually indicates pain, and unless you can find a cause for it, it's best to seek professional advice

I hadn't thought that she might have come into season.

She's only had her current shoes on a week and she is always barefoot on the back anyway. She has excellent feet

I can't think that she's in pain particularly because she was really happy being ridden tonight.
