So just back from a hack and my horse had a meltdown, which isn’t like her. Any comments, thoughts or advice welcome.

I can hack round my neighbours land and ride down a busy-ish road to access it via a locked gate. As it been dry for a few days I thought it would be nice to ride on grass. Lovely ride, all going well.

Then the horse suddenly spooks at something in the next field (testing my seat as I was riding without stirrups for that bit!). Look and these’s a quad in the next field.

Turn a circle so we can walk nicely pass the bit she spooked at... but she’s having none of it. Planting, going sideways, snorting, bunny hopping if I tap her. She’s coming back off a check ligament injury so but worried about her twisting her leg, so after a few minutes think will get off and lead her passed.

Leading is similar to ridden as we walk the whole side of the field, she’s in a real tizzy. Take her through to the next field and still not much calmer, so let her graze a bit. Walk her to the far side and get back on.

Work her in the furthest part of the field in walk and still on her toes. Get off to do gates and prancing about, so walk her back up the road (with jogging etc). Get onto a quieter lane get back on and walk her for a bit.

Get back to her field, put a cooler on and turn her out. Canters about bucking and snorting, still not very calm.

I’ve never had to lead her before. She’s a bit fresh as in less work and on some reasonable grass. Teeth done recently, physio last week, osteopath and saddle fitter are due (as she’s now back in work after a few months off getting everything done).

Hopefully a one off!

It sounds like she was just a bit fresh and feeling well. It is always a bit tricky when coming back from injury with that little worry in the back of your mind if they mess about.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, probably best to ignore any spooky behaviour and just ride forwards, not circling to repass a spooky place.

Thank you :). You’re right with hindsight I should have just ridden on. She is feeling very well.
